Dealing With Uncertain Times
These are definitely unusual and uncertain times we find ourselves in. We just want to take a few moments to address how we're dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic here at the Jail Hill Inn.
In the short term, we're following the orders of the State of Illinois and are temporarily closed to the public. The Jail Hill Inn will be closed we are closed until further notice, and will continue to follow all federal and state guidelines. We'll be updating you via social media, website, and newsletters once we can safely re-open.
While we're closed, we're taking advantage of the time and doing a few things around the Inn, including:
- Thoroughly cleaning and organizing around the Inn so that it's ready for you as soon as it's safe to be traveling again. We're even working on a few small projects as we're able.
- Taking the time to practice a little self-care! This includes catching up on some reading, daily long walks and jogs, resting, and catching up with our favorite Netflix shows.
Mostly, we are sheltering in place, staying healthy and positive, and following the advice of our local authorities and experts. We can't wait to get back open and to see your friendly faces again!

Even if you can't be here with us right now, you can still enjoy a taste of Jail Hill Inn at home. Choose from our custom coffee blends or signature box of chocolates, or go for the luxury with our Comphy sheets and custom-designed plush bathrobes. Whatever it is you crave, you'll find it at our online store.

How Can You Help?
The reality of this situation is that we're a small business. We rely on you to keep our doors open. This has been a difficult time for everyone around the country, and we're taking the necessary steps to ensure we're still here in the long run. That means we've been talking to our bank about the possible refinancing of our business loan, and looking at other resources through the local banks and the Small Business Administration.
We're concerned about the health and safety of everyone impacted by COVID-19, and we're also eager to get to the other side of this situation and get back to what we are so good at: Pampering our guests and making this incredible lodging experience possible. The town of Galena relies heavily on tourism to keep our independently-owned businesses open.
On the bright side, there are a few factors that may help Galena rebound and come back stronger than ever. Our charming, historic town is only one gas-tank away from many major metropolitan cities, we're a small town of only 3,400 residents, and of course, you'll find luxurious lodging in our 6 exclusive guest rooms at the Jail Hill Inn. None of that will require you to get on a plane or cruise ship or travel too far away from family. But it will still give you the getaway you both crave and deserve!
In the meantime, if you're looking for tangible ways you can help, here are a few suggestions:
- Plan future stays for this summer or fall, and even beyond into 2021! Life will eventually return to normal, and we'll be right here celebrating with you when it does.
- Purchase gift cards for yourself to be used at a later date.
- Purchase gift cards for others to be used at a later date. Maybe you want to cross a few names off your holiday shopping list early?
As a reminder, all deposits for existing reservations affected by this shut down will either be applied to a future stay in 2020, or turned into a gift certificate that can be used anytime in the future (or gifted to someone else if you so desire). If you want to apply your deposit towards a future reservation, please make sure you call us so we can apply your deposit correctly.

Ongoing Social Distancing
While we realize you may not be traveling to Galena right now, we hope you're making plans to visit us when the primary dangers from COVID-19 have passed. We still think it will be important to practice some sort of social distancing, as we all work toward our new post-pandemic normal. To that end, here are a few ways you can still enjoy Galena the best Galena has to offer while practicing social distancing:
- Take a walk or bike ride along the Galena River Trail. Bike rentals are available from Fever River Outfitters or Nuts Outdoors.
- Kayak down the Galena River--especially fun as the weather begins to warm! Kayak rentals are available from Fever River Outfitters or Nuts Outdoors.
- Take a hike at one of Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation properties. They include Casper Bluff, Horseshoe Mound, Wapello, and Buehler Preserve.
- Take a self-guided historic Galena walking tour through the town (we have a special Self Guided Historic Home Architectural Tour Booklet to give guests).
- Head to the local vineyards for a wine tasting.
- Enjoying time at Jail Hill on the brick patio or spacious third-floor deck to read, relax and just be with each other.
