April Happenings:

Dear friends and supporters,

We at the Iredell Arts Council join all our fellow NC Arts Councils in limiting accessibility to help eliminate the spread of this virus and return to our lives and regularly scheduled programming. We wish you safety and well being.

April is National Poetry Month. The Iredell Arts Council challenges you to write a poem every day in the month of April, previous experience is not required. April 30th is nationwide Poem in Your Pocket Day, select a poem on that day and carry it with you, share it on social media using the hashtag #pocketpoem and go to our Facebook page to share your original work.

For those simply interested in reading poetry and understanding the art form more fully, we encourage your reading Edward Hirsch’s essay, “How to Read a Poem," Take time to enjoy poems and articles found on poets.org and look online for Iredell County published poets such as Les Brown and Elisa Troutman who currently have new releases. Iredell County is home to the first published poet in the State of North Carolina, James Gay, who published his poems in 1810. Honor our past, the future and the month and dive in!

The City of Statesville has recently begun an exciting art wall that offers space for local artist to create public works of art and ever changing scenes, sort of a public art wall, at 611 S Center Street in Downtown Statesville. If you are interested in creating, go to SVL Art Wall on Facebook or contact artist4life@yadtel.net for more information.

We hope you are keeping art an integral part of your lives at this time, if not we suggest you take time to draw, paint or write. Learn a language, plant a garden, read a book. Stop by Facebook and join in our Happy Heart Hunt and view the submissions by others. Participate in any activity that helps you maintain some sense of peace and normalcy.

There are  excellent galleries online and open for Virtual Tours, here are links to get your journey started:

Musicians and performers are creating virtual concerts as well to reach the public and to stay active. You will find many of these on Facebook and YouTube simply by searching for your favorite artists. You can also link concerts through the following website:

While you are enjoying virtual concerts, our Concert Committee is working hard on rescheduling live events here at the Old Jail.  New Dates will be communicated via email and/on social media. We look forward to seeing you soon.
