In this unprecedented time, Kentucky districts and partners have come together in the most amazing ways to support one another and ensure that teachers and instructional assistants have the necessary resources and tools to provide students with high-quality instruction during NTI days. The regional special education cooperatives have collaborated to develop a comprehensive list of virtual professional learning opportunities for districts to use to support staff development. This list will be updated periodically as additional resource become available.

Positive acknowledgment is associated with improved relationships and increased student achievement. Be creative and embed elements of PBIS into your virtual communication platform. The example above from a Fayette County public School inviting students to proudly represent their school colors on social media.

Bullitt County Schools have given bus drivers a new role during the COVID-19 school closure. The bus drivers are still on the road, but instead of picking up and dropping off students, they are delivering meals, school supplies and collecting homework from across the district. Since drivers are usually the first and last person that a child sees during the school day, the driver to student relationship is critical at all levels and that interaction leaves a lasting impression. One driver reported that right now, the biggest reward of all is helping the kids get through a tough time.

Sanford Harmony Social Emotional Learning Program
|
|
We don't just teach our students academic skills; we also teach and model healthy social and emotional skills. The Sanford Harmony Online Learning Portal provides PreK-6th grade teachers with everything they need to successfully integrate a social-emotional learning program into the classroom including training, lessons, activities, videos, stories, games, and songs.
Guidance Counselor, Nancy Eversole, introduced social emotional learning program to her elementary schools in Breathitt County, Kentucky. Mrs. Eversole, a first-year elementary guidance counselor, quickly noticed the need for social/emotional lessons in her elementary schools. She noted that many students were displaying the need for instruction in areas that are often over-looked due to an emphasis on standards in core classes.
Mrs. Eversole’s two elementary schools have been participating with KY- ABRI for the past three years. After Mrs. Eversole attended the Sanford Harmony Training hosted by KY-ABRI, she immediately took the information back to her schools and developed a plan for implementation. The elementary students loved the Sandford Harmony lessons immediately. Mrs. Eversole stated, “The students had very meaningful discussions that they admittedly do not have the opportunity to have at any other point in their school day.”

The KYABRI March exemplar is Morgan County High School, located in West Liberty, KY. Approximately 569 ninth through twelfth graders attend MCHS. Over the last 3 years, MCHS staff and administration have worked diligently to establish an effective multi-tiered system of support for academics and behavior. These efforts have contributed to:
- Creating and implementing Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS)
- Identifying and providing interventions for students needing additional support
- Building effective teaming structures to discuss and analyze data
- Increasing student achievement and decreasing referrals and out of school suspensions
- Behavior data indicate that since the 2017-2018 school year:
- In-School Suspensions are down 60%
- Out-of-School Suspensions are down 47%
- Disciplinary events are down 28%
- Developing an effective acknowledgment system for students
- Improving school culture and climate
Principal Vickie Oldfield stated: "I was fortunate to have worked with KY- ABRI as an elementary principal several years ago. As I made the transition to the high school, I knew who to call for help. I was confident the KY-ABRI team would support us and guide us while we worked on improving our school climate. In addition to improving climate and culture we are now focusing our efforts on additional academic interventions. Our data show what a difference the extra support has made!"
