The Cutting Edge

April 3, 2020

Here's what's happening across our Conference, at least what I've heard about. Feel free to share this with anyone!

What really matters in your life? What are the most important things? "Big Rocks" may be what you need.

Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. -- Matthew 6:33
On Friday, April 17, 45 of our congregations will be part of "virtual evangelism" with It Is Written and John Bradshaw. With people "trapped" in their homes because of the pandemic, there are many asking serious questions about life and death. Pray for this and watch for more details.

"We are hosting the Discovering Revelation Seminar online in North Platte," says Pastor Joseph Carty. "It has been a complicated process. 130 had registered but only about 40 people have tuned in for the live broadcast. I know many are watching the recordings. We made an appeal via a digital decision card survey and had many positive decisions this week. Please pray for those who these meetings will reach," asks Pastor Carty.
We are excited to welcome Spencer Hannah as College View Academy's new principal for the 2020-21 school year," says Brian Carlson (CVA Principal), Spencer has over 25 years of school leadership experience, both as a vice-principal and principal. He has served at Blue Mountain Academy, Campion Academy and most recently at Tri-City Adventist School. He is respected as a principal and we are thrilled that he wants to serve in this role for our school," says Brian.

"I've been adding to and updating our Children's Ministries web site with great ideas for your kiddos during this 'stay-at-home' reality," says Sue Carlson (Children's Ministries Director). "You can make Sabbath and worship time
special for the young ones. Just this week we’ve added links to The Chosen videos, online stories, Storytime with Pastor Brad videos, craft ideas and an entire section of Easter activities to help families reflect on the amazing death, burial and resurrection of Jesus," says Sue.
During this time of where our churches are not meeting, please continue to support the mission of Christ through your tithes and offerings. This be done in many ways.

We have the privilege to invest in God's kingdom even during the worst of times. Thank you for your faithfulness.
"On Fridays, elementary students at College View Academy participate in a treasured tradition, AJY!" says Missy Sorter. "Just because students are learning from home doesn't mean that AJY is stopping; today students in Mrs.
Finch's second grade class sang together and learned more about the Fruits of the Spirit -- all through Zoom. Students & teachers have spent the week adjusting to the new normal in education. It's been quite a week, and we are so blessed to see the smiling faces of our students every day on our computer screens. High school students and teachers log in each morning before classes begin and worship together, there was even a rendition of 'Happy Birthday' sung to two of our students this week. It wasn't a pretty version, but the spirit of joy was strong! This morning for high school chapel, Pastor Halfhill joined in and spoke to the students and Pastor Mic Henton and his campus ministries team are still working hard to minister to our students on a daily basis. Times are different, but education, ministry and the care from the teachers is not changing!" says Missy.
"The La Crosse, Kansas church has had prayer meetings on Wednesday nights," says Pastor Mitch Elrod. "We have been studying about prayer. Skip Arner teaches from the book, 'Prayer Works,' for small groups.  We have had about 12 attendees. At a time of fear and panic this has been a great study. We have kept safe distance and hand sanitizers," says Pastor Mitch.

"College View Academy welcomes Renae Cross to our teaching staff," says Brian Carlson (principal). "She will serve as our K-12 music teacher beginning next school year. She graduated from Union College and has most recently been working as a music teacher in the Lincoln Public School system. Please join us in giving her a warm CVA welcome!" says Brian.

A Message From Our Mid-America Union President

During these uncertain times surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, Mid-America Union president Gary Thurber offers a message of encouragement and hope.
"School at George Stone goes on as normal...well, almost!" says Jenienne Kriegelstein. "Mrs. Simpson's K-4 students meet her in a Zoom room and they have even had breakfast together! Of course, the instruction follows with, that's right, more technology! My class
meets in another Zoom room. They have taken a quizz, collaborated in Google slides and communicated in zoom for a presentation, gotten their math assignments from Jupiter and gone to big ideas to work online, and they have even turned in some writing on Jupiter! We will soon be turning in
our math papers that show our work! We are so thankful for the support of parents who have assisted their student's with technology setups and tweaking systems to make this possible! Psalm 46 has become very meaningful this week as their parents sew masks, lose friends and patients to the virus,
and experience cutbacks and loss of jobs. He is our Refuge, our Fortress! We can be still and know He is our God! So thankful for Adventist education!" says Jenienne.
"Are you in need of a little good news?" asked Pastor Harold Alomia (College View Church). "We've got it covered with a new daily devotional that you can watch starting at 9:00 a.m., Monday through Friday on our Facebook page."
"With schools being closed and left looking for what do do next, on Thursday evening my daughter joined me on a community service to shop and distribute food items," says Paul Mwangi (KC New Haven). "We were able to feed five families
affected by unemployment due to closure or business during this period in time of Covid-19. We praise God for blessing us to bless others," says Paul.
Lincoln Camp Meeting
We are disappointed to announce that Camp Meeting in Lincoln (May 27-30)  has been cancelled. Watch for future updates about food and book sales.
Summer Camp .... YES!!! (we hope)
"Our theme this summer is 'You Are Here' which focuses on the unpredictability of life and yet God is faithful through it all," says Tim Floyd (Youth/Young Adult Director). "What better message for our young people (and staff) than to spend dedicated time focusing on how God is in control and His will is always fulfilled in our lives! I'm in need of a few
more staff. If you know someone who is at least 16 years old when camp starts (May 24) please send them my way! Camper and Staff registrations can be found by clicking here. Or, for more information, call or text me at 828-707-6542," says Pastor Tim.
"At College View Church we’re trying to figure out how we can all still hang out and have community," says Pastor Mic Henton. "We miss each other! So we’re still meeting for Waffle Wednesday (just without the waffles). This week we played Food Roulette where names of those who logged in had to show their fridge to the rest of the group and the three others got to choose any item to mix together and then they had to eat it. We had a blast, it was the most fun I’ve had since being in quarantine. We’re looking forward to next Wednesday for our own version of Lego Masters!" says Pastor Mic.
Carlene Lang, our teacher in Chardon, Nebraska is teaching her students from a distance, all alone in her classroom. "This morning I thought I was working at school by myself, but guess not! It appears he has taken over the students’ favorite piece of playground equipment, the tire swing, but then again looks can be deceiving!" says Carlene
Our Youth/Yong Adult Director, Tim Floyd, has put together a bunch of amazing resources for that age group during this social distancing reality. Click here. "Please share this with any youth or young adults you might know," asks Tim.
The proverbial phrase says, 'When life gives you lemons, make lemonade,'" says Pastor Rod Scherencel. "And that is what we are doing in Southeastern Kansas. In some ways Covid-19 social-distancing is a curse, but in other ways God has turned it into a wonderful blessing. As with many of
my fellow pastors I have been learning new tools of the trade for ministry while being shut in during this pandemic. This has provided my churches (Fort Scott, Pittsburg and Hepler) and me opportunities not before experienced. On our computers, smart phones and landlines we met for
church last Sabbath to worship via video/teleconferencing. The blessing, as it turned out, was not only the joy of getting together to chat and to worship with all the regulars but also that some who have not been as regular joined us on line. How good it was to see them! And a couple short Facebook invitations to our virtual church services have elicited responses from people who do not normally attend church at all but who want to join us next week. I can hardly wait for Sabbath School and church time each week," says Pastor Rod.
Free: Help! I'm a Parent Book and DVD Set!
Are you looking for a little extra help as you adjust to your family’s new normal during COVID-19? This Help! I’m a Parent set includes a book and DVD full of tips for raising kids ages 8-12. Chapters cover study skills, peer pressure and bullying, puberty, healthy habits, and more. Click here.
"Though most of us were miles apart, Midland Adventist Academy students and staff enjoyed our weekly Friday chapel time together," says Richard Young (principal). "It was encouraging to see happy faces and hear familiar voices as we prayed and shared together. We were reminded that even though we are apart from each other, we are not alone," says Richard.
The Conference office is closed through April 26 because of the "Safer at Home" order for Topeka. All non-essential businesses are closed. Our staff will be working from home and are still eager to serve you. Leave a phone message at 785-478-4726. Messages will be retrieved daily.
The offering this Sabbath is for your local church budget. Even while we are not meeting in our church buildings, the expenses are still there. Please continue to be generous even while we are apart. "Shellie and her two children walked into a local library. She struck up a conversation with another mother who also had two children of similar age."  Click here.
I get to share a message through video tomorrow with the Lincoln Northside and Holland congregations. You're welcome to join us at 11:00 a.m. on the Northside Church Facebook page or YouTube Live or Zoom. My message will be, "Unlikely Miracle Workers."
**If you know something that you think would be of interest to other Kansas-Nebraska Adventists, please let me know. I am trying to keep everyone on the "cutting edge" by sending this out each Friday.

Have a wonderful Sabbath!
