An Update from the Columbia Slough Watershed Council
We are thinking of you - our supporters, partners, students, and volunteers - and wishing you good health and safety during this challenging time.

Personal and professional lives have been impacted by COVID-19, and the Council is no exception. Like for many others, COVID-19 is testing us with operational, programmatic, financial and emotional impacts.

Almost all of our work is about getting people out into the watershed and making in-person connections with nature. Throughout the year we introduce neighbors to paddling the Slough, bring businesses and volunteers together to pick up trash, offer kids hands-on learning in environmental science, and much, much more.

Since March 12th our staff have been working from home to help flatten the curve and we have cancelled all in-person events through the end of April. We anticipate that these measures will continue into May.  We know that, right now, the greatest public service that we can provide as an organization is to help slow the spread of COVID-19 by staying at home and encouraging others to do the same.

So how can we still connect with each other to help protect and enhance the Columbia Slough and its watershed?

We’re glad you asked. Our staff have some ideas to share so please read on and stay tuned via our social media sites and website!

We will continue delivering fresh ideas and Slough lessons to keep our spirits up while we all stay home. And if you can, please consider making a donation to the Columbia Slough Watershed Council so that we can keep working for the watershed.

Sincerely,

The Slough Staff

Stewardship News

One of the most effective ways to improve the watershed from home is to create a rain garden. In the coming weeks, we will provide you with the technical knowledge on how to do so.

Happy 50th Earth Day!

The year 2020 is the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, and the beginning of our second generation as the Columbia Slough Watershed Council. Please consider making a donation to the Council so that we can keep working for the watershed.
Your gift will help ensure that, when it's safe to do so, we can resume our regular programming and be there for the protection and enhancement of the Slough for the long haul.

In fact, for the entire month of April (aka Earth Month!) any donation of $100** or greater will be entered in a raffle to win a new kayak (drawing on May 1st) so that when it is once again safe to do so, you can get out and explore the Slough.

*Please note that the upcoming Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act) (S. 748) includes an above-the-line deduction for all taxpayers up to $300 -- in other words, if you make a $300 donation to the Council, you get a $300 tax break in addition to the standard deduction.
**If you give $500, your name will be entered in the raffle 5 times (once for every $100 increment.)

Community Support Resources During COVID-19

Are you looking for ways you can help others impacted by COVID-19?  Do you need help accessing basic necessities during this time?

The PDX COVID-19 Mutual Aid Network is providing ways you can both offer to help others and request help accessing food, medicine, and other basic necessities. You can fill out their Request Form to ask for assistance or their Offer Form to volunteer to help. Check out this short news story to learn more.

For East Multnomah County, the SnowCap Food Pantry is distributing pre-packed food boxes outside at their location on SE Stark St. Contact them about volunteer needs: info@snowcap.org.

Multnomah County is hiring in several temporary positions as well as seeking volunteers to staff temporary emergency shelters. Send resume, contact info, available start date, as well as any questions to: shelterjobs@multco.us.

Lastly, Verde Landscape, one of the Council's invaluable partners, has been heavily impacted by COVID-19 and has halted operations indefinitely. They are largely responsible for prepping the sites our volunteers plant during a Stewardship Saturday, but also lead youth plantings among many other activities.  They have started a GoFundMe page with the goal of raising $12,000 which would pay all 10 landscape employees with severance pay of $1,200 to help get them get by during the pandemic. So far they've raised  just over $6,800. If you are interested in supporting their work and can make a donation, visit their GoFundMe Page Here.
