Happy Merry April Fool's Day, <<First Name>>!

It's the first of the month and I pray this message finds you all safe, healthy, and sane. I, like others, have been staying at home, washing my hands, checking in on friends, and using this time to work on myself and my projects.

The pen has been active as well. In the past month or so, I have rapped with Chuck D and his camp about releasing Flavor Flav; shared everything I learned from Donald Glover's mysterious new album; chronicled Jay Electronica's timeline from Act I to A Written Testimony; celebrated D-Nice's #ClubQuarantine success with Essence, and fanboy'd out about Gentefied with show creators Linda Yvette Chávez and Marvin Lemus.

Earlier this week was National Doctors Day and I wanted to close this note with a sincere note of gratitude to all the nurses, aides, doctors, custodial workers, intake providers, social workers, and more who are on the frontlines fighting against this coronavirus pandemic. Your work and service do not go unnoticed by this immunocompromised Black man, and I hope everyone reading this does their part to share thanks and flatten the curve.

Now, allow me to share some healthcare news that you need to know...

#NewNewArtists Pick

Larry June

Hailed as one of the most exciting new artists in the past few years, I stumbled across Larry June while searching for health-inspired hip-hop merchandise. Funny that while doing so, I would run into the "healthiest n***a in the rap game," a 28-year-old Bay Area-bred rhyme animal. In fact, aside from music, health is promoted through every facet of his life. One look at his Twitter or Instagram, and you'll see that his "brand" is all about encouraging others and championing positivity, paired with his signature orange emoji.

"I must stay healthy on a punk b***h," June shared in a chat with Elevator. "I always got the water on me, got that orange-faced Rollie on my wrist. I'm just always on my healthy s**t. We only live once and we only get one body so take care of it." His Larry and Orange Season EPs released back in 2016, were strong efforts that got him on the road with Asher Roth and Post Malone, while his not-so-secret goal will endear him to a whole new fan base. "I'm looking to start my own grocery store called Larry Foods," he told XXL that same year. "It's like a whole food store like Trader Joe's."

While many of his peers glorify xannies and other drug use, Larry's approach to songs is to incorporate his trap experiences with his current healthy lifestyle. The release of Orange Season coincided with a game app where players collected oranges to fill a power meter for a high score. Similarly, songs such as "Trappin' Orange Juice", "24k Organic", and "Lets Get Smoothies" shows the Vallejo MC delivering focused and transparent raps without the extra salt or added preservatives that you find in other people's raps.

I've been enjoying digging through his brand of "easy listening Trap," with projects such as You're Doing Good and his latest, Adjust to the Game, serving as a blessing to me and my own goals with promoting health and culture to the masses. "Healthy" with Jazz Cartier has been a huge inspiration to me. "I want to see [people] care about their body more and live life while they're here," Larry said to Elevator. "I talk about everything: pimpin', dope, trappin', but at the end of the day, I still stand for something."

La Musica de Kevito

Skushi (ft. Dremo)

DJ Ecool's rep as one of the most in-demand sound controllers gets a boost with his New Side EP. Featuring the likes of Mayorkun, Kimani, Zlatan, and production by Phantom and Bossbeatz, "Skushi" is a jam that should be an early addition to you Afrochella/Afro Nation 2020 playlist. The producer-actor-musician offers up some positive vibes that will have you pulling out your best dance moves and smiling as the beat courses through your soul.

minding_my_business (ft. Durand Bernarr & Rose Gold)

Every Knxwledge loosie, remix, and project has led to this moment. 1988 is the culmination of thousands of available tracks via his Bandcamp and SoundCloud pages. The prolific producer has grounded this work in reflection and what better way to do so than with "minding_my_business". Featuring my faves, Durand Bernarr + Rose Gold, this song is grimy yet pristine and beautiful at the same time.

Ooh LA LA (ft. Greg Nice & DJ Premier)

Run the Jewels have shared the second song from their forthcoming LP Run the Jewels 4 called "Ooh LA LA". Produced by El-P, the track features Killer Mike, DJ Premier, and Greg Nice, while prominently showcasing the classic sample from Gang Starr's "DWYCK." While this song isn't going to make anyone's yoga playlists, "Ooh LA LA" is a dope attempt by the firebrand duo to chill us out during this crazy pandemic.
