If you have any burning questions or even a story idea related to students, universities and higher education, drop us an email or get in touch via our social media channels. We are going to be covering the latest students' news with a sprinkle of great opportunities for students.

It’s Day 6 of the 21-day lockdown which came into effect from midnight on Thursday evening, March 26. For many students and South Africans, the lockdown has presented a difficult reality. While for some, the lockdown meant staying indoors catching up on their reading or working, others faced many difficulties. There were issues of police brutality in some of the informal settlements and townships while many people had to queue in long lines to receive their social grants.

What’s happening on campuses?

The department of higher education, science and innovation have announced that they are working with colleges and universities to pursue online learning. The communications and digital technologies minister will reportedly be helping with the access to data for the online learning.

The lockdown has meant that many examinations and assignments were postponed as students left universities. There are currently plans to help students to gain access to examination papers and materials to prepare for the examinations.

Many students were forced to quickly leave campuses as all universities closed their campuses as well as the residences. Check out the previous newsletter which looked at the issue. Not all students have been able to return home and some universities are staying at residences on campus.

There are students remaining on residences on the following universities: University of Fort Hare, University of Johannesburg, University of the Western Cape, North West University, Central University of Technology, University of Pretoria, Sol Plaatje University,  Vaal University of Technology, Mangosuthu University of Technology, Rhodes University, Walter Sisulu University, Stellenbosch University, Cape Peninsula University, Wits University, Sefako Makgatho University, University of Limpopo, University of Venda, University of the Free State, University of Cape Town, Nelson Mandela University, University of KwaZulu-Natal, University of Zululand.

Check out OUR COVERAGE of how universities within South Africa and around the world are dealing with COVID-19.
