April News

William Wordsworth in 1804Celebrating 250 Years since William Wordsworth's birth

April 7th is the 250th anniversary of the birth of the English Romantic Poet, William Wordsworth. William and his family spent a good deal of time with Sir George Beaumont, 7th baronet, and his wife Margaret, and got involved with the planning and design of the gardens surrounding the newly built Coleorton Hall.
The beautiful location and the support of Sir George and Lady Margaret inspired Wordsworth to create some of his best-known works.

The Wordsworth household consisted of William, wife Mary, sister in law Sara Hutchinson and sister Dorothy (also a writer) and 5 children. Over the years the family became frequent visitors and their son John became curate at Coleorton and Whitwick Churches under Francis Merewether.

Homes in Coleorton

The Thatches, Coleorton
                                           The Thatches, Stoney Lane, Coleorton

People have been living in Coleorton since the before 1066. There are recorded properties in the Domesday book. The village has seen a lot of changes since then! In fact anyone who has lived here for a while will see many changes - new houses being built, cottages being renovated and extended and often being partly or completely demolished in the process. Of course, this is all part of life. There's more of us now and we all want to live in spacious houses with all mod cons - not the one-up one-down with a privy out the back like previous generations.

Houses go through changes as do their residents and they become a record of past lives and social history. For historians this is gold. We are collecting stories about houses and  properties in Coleorton. This doesn't have to be just cottages that are a hundred years old. Time moves on and in 50 years time our grandchildren will be looking back at the history of Coleorton and asking about what happened in the "old days" in 2020 when we were all in isolation!

Good time to do a bit of research, or just write down what you know now.

Lockdown reading

I've heard it said that some people are having difficulty filling their time now that they are confined to isolation at home. Must say that this is not a problem I have - with this being the busiest time of the year in the garden, sowing and planting out vegetables, getting the borders tidy, repairing seats and tables - the list is endless. However, if you have time on your hands there is plenty of reading to be had from our Research Resources pages.

Also take a look at our growing list of articles about local history and families. Just a suggestion - why not write up a piece about your own family or the history of your house. Email it to me and I'll post it on the website so we can all enjoy.
If you have any questions, heritage/history-related stories or ideas or would like to get more involved with Coleorton Heritage Group you're very welcome. please email heritagegroup@coleorton.org.uk or phone 01530 440000.
