Good morning
Today is the last day to save 5.00 for pre-orders of Michael Hagdorn's Bonsai Heresy. We are frankly amazed at how many orders we've received so far. We knew it would be popular, but had little idea just how popular

A week or so ago I received my press press copy and now I'm throughly engrossed. Michael is a brilliant and compelling story teller and his grasp of the depth and breadth of the art and science of bonsai is mind boggling. Needless to say, I heartily recommend it
Now for our disclaimer: we covered printing and are the sole distributor of Bonsai Heresy

the artists are Mother Nature and Robert Kempinshi
Continued from above...
According to the printer, we might expect Bonsai Heresy to arrive in early May. I say 'might' because even in more ordinary times, estimated arrival dates aren't all always reliable. And because these are not ordinary times, no guarantees. We'll keep you posted

Sticking with Buttonwoods
here's a good one by Enrique Castaño
from a 2018 Bonsai Bark post
Here's one from South America
by Nacho Marin
we featured Nacho in our 'Beasts of the Southern Wild'
Bonsai Bark post last week

Buttonwoods are native to both North & South America and Africa as well as the Caribbean and some Pacific Islands
Another one by Nacho Marin
the contrast between this one and the one just above provides
a good example of the range possibilities wth Buttonwoods
Buttonwoods are prized for their convoluted, weathered deadwood. Much of this character is the result of hurricanes and other violent tropical storms. In some cases
they are picked up by strong winds and carried to other locations where they put down new roots,
often resulting in a complete reorientation of the plant
From today's Bonsai Bark post (scroll down for more)
Here's one on the cover of BCI magazine
the tree belongs to Paul Pikel
We borrowed the photo from Bonsai Mary
Buttonwood Leaf Reduction
 from Bonsai Mary's newsletter

"In the tropics Conocarpus can be defoliated two or three times a year with no problem. In other climates, there have been reports of dieback from complete defoliation.
Over time, full sun, root restriction and regular pruning will also reduce leaf size. Lots of twigging encourages smaller leaves, so prune frequently"

Bonsai Mary lives and breaths bonsai in Florida and has written extensively about tropical bonsai and other bonsai topics. For more you you might want to subscribe to Mary's newsletter

TIE POT SPECIAL
But first a quick review by Harry Harrington...

"While at The Trophy I managed to secure a supply of these
Tie-Pots, heavy duty bonsai training pots with a system of baffles and air holes that cause your developing trees to continually air-prune the roots.
This system helps produce very dense, fibrous root systems ready for a bonsai pot.
The baffles ensure that roots are forced out towards the air holes (unlike when using pond baskets or colanders), while providing excellent has exchange into the soil.
Although not quite as sturdy as mica, they will still last a long long time so are a good investment."
