DC's Citywide Efforts Support All Students During Pandemic
The DC Public Charter School Board continues to collaborate with DCPS, the DME, OSSE, and other city agencies to support all students during the COVID-19 pandemic. On our website, we have information available about where to get meals, learn about current policies, read about distance learning strategies, and more. To date, Public Charter Schools have served more than 7,500 meals to students. View the resource library here.

Moreover, following the guidance issued by Mayor Bowser, every DC Public Charter School will remain closed and continue distance learning until Friday, April 24, and reopen on Monday, April 27. View every school's operating status here
Distance Learning at Public Charter Schools
In response to the school's closing due to COVID-19, DC Public Charter Schools quickly transitioned their brick and mortar classrooms to digital learning platforms. These distance learning plans ensure students receive instruction at home.

Here are the conventional approaches schools are implementing:
  1. Learning Packet Instruction
    • Schools distributed learning packets to students by mail or pick up. These materials align with each school's educational program and curriculum. This is the primary form of instruction for schools serving PK through K students. Click to see an example.

  2. Web-based Instruction
    • Schools using this model are live-streaming instruction or sharing pre-recorded lessons using platforms such as Zoom or Google Classroom. Schools are providing Chromebooks to all students. And to assist students who do not have access to the internet or computers, schools have purchased WiFi hotspots or directed families to companies providing free or low-cost access to WiFi such as Comcast or AT&T. Click to see an example.

  3. Multiple-Modality Approach to Instruction
    • Schools using this model use learning packets as their primary form of instruction, but supplement that approach with online learning opportunities. These online learning opportunities look like traditional classroom instruction, or project group work on video chat, among other things. Click to see an example.

With all the approaches outlined above, teachers are supporting students by:

  • Checking in Frequently by phone or text

  • Using Google Hangout or other platforms to communicate

  • Hosting virtual office hours using Google Hangout or Zoom

“My kids in middle school enjoy using Google teams to do their interactive lessons with their teachers. My oldest daughter enjoys the virtual learning after adjusting from a primarily in-person school format to a virtual, self-paced format.” Sharod Wade, Parent, Paul PCS International School

"Since we have been out of school and implementing Distance Learning, I send my 6th Grade ELA Scholars a morning message daily. The messages also include daily assignments. My scholars and I are adjusting well because we're familiarizing ourselves with using Chromebooks during daily class instruction.

"To add a little more joy to our distance learning circumstances, we have virtual field trips, video chats for instructional help, and we even have lunch together! Seeing their faces light up so bright when our meetings start makes me realize why I love my job!" Ms. Ashley Knight, 6th Grade English Language Arts Teacher, Perry Street Preparatory PCS
