Stay...and Pray at home 2020 edition

COVID-19 in Guatemala!

This global crisis is surreal yet so real and life-altering!! It still is mind boggling to think that something that is affecting our lives here in Guatemala is also affecting every, single person that we know in every single part of the world. Even as our prayer list grows and stretches to reach nearly every corner of the world we are reminded that many are praying for us as well. In that we find much courage.

  • The efforts of the government of Guatemala to "flatten the curve" of the Coronavirus have been swift and courageous. We are thankful and prayerful!
  • There is a country-wide curfew of 4PM-4AM each day. No one is to be out of their homes at all during this time.
  • Daily activity is restricted to essential business. Only one family member is permitted in grocery stores at a time, and total shoppers are limited within the store at a time. All schools, churches and any meetings of any size forbidden.
  • Borders are officially closed. Up until today there have been several chartered flights available to evacuate US citizens.

Life and Ministry in These Times

Within our first few days AT HOME we had to evaluate and pray about how ministry would look for us. We asked the question, "Why are we here?" and then "How can we fulfill that mission from home?

La Escuelita - We have been taking the opportunity to clean and organize. Each staff member has several families to contact each week to encourage and pray with. Daily, each family receives a text (within the first few minutes after the 4 o'clock curfew), with a Bible passage to read and a related question/activity/.We envision families pouring over the Word together, mining the text for the daily gems!

Calvary Chapel Antigua - We connect with leadership through Zoom calls and have begun leading the Wednesday night Foundations of the Faith class via Zoom as well. Services are now on Facebook live. We are also challenged that many who may never attend church now have the opportunity to hear the transforming words of the Gospel as many churches move to an online format. If you also are attending online services we encourage you to "share" these services as you "attend".

Parenting classes - We have begun one small online class and will be receiving more training over the weekend. We are also, along with Kristin, students in a class on understanding and healing childhood trauma.
One of the biggest blessings of this time for us has been the ability to live in Guatemala yet connect, worship and pray with our faith communities in the US via Facebook live and Zoom. We are also communicating regularly with our family members both near and far. How grateful we are for the technology in place to shorten the distance and extend great encouragement!
Prayer needs as we move forward:
  • The widespread economic implications of this crisis are beginning to be felt. It is helpful to remember the Lord's faithfulness in times past and strengthen our faith for these times. We are in prayer daily for God's hand on situations worldwide. We appreciate your prayers for us as well.
  • Pray for guidance from the Lord, eyes that see and ears that hear His voice and that we will have hearts willing to quickly obey in regard to needs around us.
  • Pray for supernatural provision for ministries and missionaries worldwide.
  • We believe that this time is a call to return to the  family - the foundational institution of society - the family! We are praying for wives and husbands to be unified, for fathers and mothers to be attentive leaders in their homes and for families to respond to this crisis in ways that draw them closer in relationship with God Himself!
We are so grateful for the ministry of Cornerstone International and to be part of its worldwide family! During this time we are thankful for the calls, counsel and most of all the prayer that we can count on from the CI staff and family.

Firm Foundations
Yes, these are trying times, possibly for every single reader of this newsletter. Yet, we feel that God will be glorified in each situation as we fix our eyes on Him, trust in Him and influence others to do the same.

A repeated refrain in Psalm 42, 43:
"Why are you downcast, O my soul,
and why are you in turmoil within me?
HOPE in God; for I shall again praise Him,
my salvation and my God."

May we lift our heads in hope and praise to the God of our salvation
and bear that message to the nations.

by His grace and for His glory,
Dale and Anita
