Friends of MICD,

As we continue trying to make sense of the COVID-19 crisis, I recently wrote about ways the design community can strategize and plug into response and recovery efforts. As always, we welcome your feedback.

While mayors are on the front lines of everything from enforcing stay-at-home orders to sourcing protective equipment, we're also inspired by the many ways they are rallying their communities, boosting morale through initiatives like Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer's Lift Up Lou. We're asking for your help in identifying other recent efforts to build critical social infrastructure. What's on your radar?

How designers can help respond to COVID-19

In an opinion piece published today at Common Edge, MICD Executive Director Trinity Simons shares a strategy for design professionals who want to help respond to the COVID-19 crisis.

"Simply raising your hand doesn’t have much value when people are in a crisis mode. Designers must think about the specific skills they have and map them to the mission at hand. The handful of examples listed below demonstrate areas where people, firms, and organizations have spotted specific opportunities that match their existing expertise and relationships where they can pitch in, either immediately or in the near future."

Guidelines for designing spaces that fight infection

As noted in the above article, MASS Design Group, a nonprofit design firm based in Boston, has spent the last decade building new spaces and retrofitting existing buildings to promote infection control. City leaders and designers alike can benefit from their experience, which is being distilled into new tools and guidelines.

The first two guides, Designing Spaces for Infection Control and Guidelines for Limiting Contagion in COVID-19 Tent Clinics, are now available at the link below.

How is your city boosting morale?

As cities grapple with the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, mayors are experimenting with new ways to lift up their residents and build the critical "social infrastructure" needed to get their communities through this crisis.

Lift Up Lou in Louisville, KY is an effort to provide the community with activities and resources to boost spirits during the coronavirus pandemic. Through the website and social media, the initiative serves as a hub for ways to donate, local business information, uplifting stories, and more.

Know of another city initiative that seeks to build community during this challenging time? Please let us know at info@micd.org for inclusion in an upcoming list.
