In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, people are trying to relax, but are still concerned about their food and preparing meals. As you settle in for the long haul, it’s good to have a list of food items you can have on hand that are safe, tasty, easy to prepare, and not expensive.

Here are 15 items that are not hard to find and you can stock up safely, too. They have a long shelf life which is really important as the crisis may continue for many more weeks or even months.

  1. Crackers - For snacking along with your cheeses, peanut butter, or served along with soups and stews to add zest.
  2. Hard Cheeses - Hard cheeses, like Parmesan, have a much longer shelf-life than soft cheeses. Buy blocks of cheese and grate them yourself.
  3. Cured Meats - Cured meats like salami have a long shelf life and are versatile, too. Snack on them as is or use them to make sandwiches.
  4. Fresh Vegetables - Root vegetables like potatoes, sweet potatoes, beets, carrots, parsnips, turnips, and radishes can last for weeks in your produce drawer.
  5. Canned Tuna - Canned tuna or salmon can be the basis of a cheap quick salad, and canned anchovies and sardines can be eaten as is or used to add more flavor to any dish.
  6. Boxed Broth - Broth can serve as a base for soups, stews, and sauces.
  7. Peanut Butter - Peanut butter can be added to your smoothie, used as a dip for fruit and veggies, or enjoyed by the spoonful.
  8. Eggs - Eggs are traditionally a breakfast food, but they can really be enjoyed any time of day or added to a number of dishes for extra flavor (fried rice, anyone?) and they last a long time in the fridge.
  9. Pasta - Pasta can make for an easy side dish or main course and is both cheap and easy to store.
  10. Rice - Rice is a great complement to many meals, and it’s easy to store leftovers. Stock up on white, brown, and wild rice for a variety of flavors.
  11. Beans - Beans are not only cheap, but they’re also incredibly filling. Add them to a rice bowl or enjoy as a side dish.
  12. Canned Veggies - Incorporate veggies into soups, stews, and stir-fries for added nutrition.
  13. Mixed Nuts - Buy a can of nuts as they are a great healthy snack to have on hand.
  14. Dried Fruit - Dried fruit makes for a healthy snack or dessert and is also great as a salad topping.
  15. Spices - Garlic powder, salt, pepper, and more to add flavor to almost anything you prepare.
By keeping staples and seasonings on hand, you can always find something to prepare.
The Ultimate Guide of Fun Things to Do Online for Free
With many of us in quarantine or isolation to try to halt the spread of the coronavirus, your computer (or smartphone or tablet) is your gateway to the world. Even though we should be productive with work and/or household chores, it’s also important to take some time for fun. Fortunately, many organizations and individuals have been making their online resources free for viewing, which brings us to…the ultimate guide of fun things to do online for free!

The range of activities available online include educational classes, performances, virtual tours/field trips, books, fitness classes, and more. (I didn’t even include your favorite blogs and podcasts.) And many are family-friendly. Some of these activities were always free, others have been made free because of the pandemic. And you know that free is my favorite word!

Crisis Time - The Wants Versus Needs Test
In an event that’s so horrific like this pandemic, I am searching for something to cling to and be able to continue writing here. At some point, and I wish I knew when, life will once again become more normal. And when that happens, personal finances will once again be a huge topic of conversation. But, actually, it really is even right now. It all comes down to wants versus needs.

Now, during a real crisis, is one of those times when it’s particularly important to understand what you really need, as opposed to stuff you just want. The COVID-19 pandemic is the reason why prioritizing your needs has become so important. It was perhaps all just fun and games for some before this so called “gut punch”, but it’s not anymore!

That’s exactly why it’s critical to know what is really important, what you really need and will ultimately help protect you and your family during this situation and then for all of your future, too.

Super Saving Tip of the Week:

Tune in for FREE!

Your TV providers—both cable and satellite service—usually offer customers a free trial access to great movie channels. TV is just another outlet for escape during the pandemic. It’s very easy to overspend on subscription services and movie rentals, so instead I used my provider, Verizon FiOS for its FREE trial access to HBO, Showtime, Cinemax, and other great venues for 48 hours.

If you are a subscriber, then also checkout the hundreds of FREE movies that are available as a bonus in the “On Demand” portal in your channel selections as well.

Subscription services like Hulu, CBS All Access, Sundance Now, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Showtime and YouTube Premium all offer month-long free trials, while STARZ, Disney+, Apple TV+, HBO Now, Philo, Boomerang, and fuboTV dole out 1 week of free streaming. Check out what providers are offering and take advantage of it while you have the time to sit and enjoy it.

Just remember to make sure you cancel when your free trial is over and you are not committed to continue if you do not want to! Oh, and hey, this may be the perfect time to break out those old dusty DVD’s piled up in your “library” and take another look just for fun too.
