Community Resilience from Transition Stroud!

Dear readers,

I hope this newsletter finds you well, and coping with the many challenges and pressures we’re all now experiencing. Transition Stroud both collectively and through individual action, has been responding to the current crisis by focusing on community resilience.

In this newsletter we have all kinds of useful resources for you, and we’ll keep those coming via the website and social media during the month.

The seasonal flower photos in this newsletter were taken by Culture Shift member Bob Fry. Thank you for those!

If you’re doing something you think might encourage or cheer other people, email Bryn for the newsletter – brynnethnimue@gmail.com or contact us by social media (see below). We’ll do what we can to support fellow travellers locally, tag us on Twitter for re-tweets and pop things on the facebook wall  for sharing.

Transition Stroud online resources

There are now an array of resouces on the website that may help you cope with the impact of corona virus and isolation.

If you need to move a project online but don’t really know where to start, have a look at this page - https://www.transitionstroud.org/online/ There are some pointers, and if these aren’t enough, email admin@transitionstroud.org

If you want to move an event online by sharing videos through social media, this is a really easy approach. If you have a mobile phone with a camera, or a computer with a camera then you can record small videos really easily. Anything uploaded to youtube can be shared on from there. If you’d like any advice, or to have content shared via transition Stroud’s Facebook page or Twitter account, contact brynnethnimue@gmail.com

We’ve uploaded to the website a zine that offers resource to support mutual aid-based projects providing services for their communities amid the COVID-19 pandemic: https://www.transitionstroud.org/transition2014/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/COVID-SupplyDistro-MASafetyPracticesZine-WEB.pdf If you aren’t sure about safety around supporting other people, this is for you.

Stroud Coronavirus Community Response

This is an excellent online resource for carefully sourced information, and to get involved with community action.

Rodborough Community Mutual Aid Network

You may have seen the explosion in neighbourhood organisations setting up over the last few weeks. For a full list you can look at this Covid Mutual Aid UK website
After seeing the main Stroud Coronavirus community Response, we decided to get together and help our local community to self organise over the next 6 months (and hopefully beyond). We are just a group of local residents, we do not have all the answers and we are not a professional organisation.

We are a fully independent group but we are linking in with the Stroud District Council and the Gloucestershire-wide Help Hub so that we can help ensure that every single vulnerable person in our Parish has the support that they need.

We have helped Rodborough to organise itself into small Neighbour Networks that cover one or two streets each (these are mainly coordinated through WhatsApp but each street organises independently with a system that works for them). We printed 2,000 leaflets and distributed them to 4 leaflet hubs around the Parish so that Neighbour Networks could leaflet their own streets. We believe that 90% of the houses in the Rodborough Parish have been leafleted with the flyer below.

Sysconfig have donated a telephone number to us that is staffed by DBS checked volunteers. If no-one is available to answer, messages can be left on voicemail and will be actioned as soon as possible. The purpose of this line is to direct callers to their nearest Neighbour Network, to provide useful signposting to resources and to escalate support requests in an emergency.

For most people their first point of contact will be their local network/group but this number is available as a safe and secure back-up that is available across the Parish.

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is our overriding concern. The people that we are trying to help will often be elderly, isolated or vulnerable. Many more people will become vulnerable over the course of this pandemic and it is crucial that we take particular care over safeguarding.
We are depending on small close-knit networks of neighbours to work together, taking some comfort in the knowledge that everyone knows everyone else. We are also ensuring that we a)collect as little data as possible and b) keep that data secure. Each Neighbour Network takes responsibility for the households in it’s streets.
It is very important that you do not identify any person who is currently (or who may become) vulnerable in any public spaces. We have found these training notes an excellent resource. They were put together by the National Food Service specifically for neighbourhood groups to use during this pandemic.

Hygiene

Good hygiene is essential and we recommend reading the following resources ahead of any support activities.

Practical steps for Support Work

Please check out the Stroud Coronavirus Community Response website and the accompanying Facebook page to find details of your local group. Let us know if you would like some help/support in setting up/organising/expanding your local mutual aid group. We will do what we can.

In solidarity,
Tosca, Helen, Georgia & Robin

Mask Making with the Textiles Group

Flexicare – a company providing home care for the elderly - were on Radio Gloucestershire and said that some of the staff were making masks for when they visit people at home. They haven't got enough masks so they are trying to make them for the clients they visit.
If anyone would like to join Clare in making some masks then see the video. It's quite straight forward.

Art Sheets for Home Schooling

Culture Shift member Tom Brown has been creating colouring sheets for anyone who needs distraction. These are suitable for children, but don’t let age put you off from having a go!

The sample sheet posted here is quite small, as mailchimp doesn’t handle large images well. You can download colouring sheets from the Copperage gallery - https://www.deviantart.com/copperage/gallery/all
