President Message

Greetings to all Clubs and Societies in Victoria,

I have recently returned from Arctic Norway and now sit in Isolation at home. Thousands of individuals are in my position and we can only hope that everyone does their part in doing what they can to stop the spread of Covid 19.

These are surreal times indeed and it will be a trying time for many of us.
In keeping with the government announcements and new regulations, we will not be holding any public functions as a society and this issue of News-brief will give you a run-down on what the committee have implemented.

We could get somewhat negative about the whole scenario, but being responsible citizens and doing what we can will help it play out much more quickly and we can move on with our lives.

On a positive note, all of us can sort through our photo files and get them up to date! For many of us this a huge task and no doubt something we might have been putting off for a rainy day…well this is it! It has arrived!

Our convention plans are under way for 2021 and basically, we are arranging as much as possible to just move speakers and presentations from this year to the following year.

I hope all of you and your families and loved ones will stay safe and healthy in this serious period of time.

Warm regards

Ian Rolfe
(President VAPS)

VAPS Information
Interclub News

Several changes to the VAPS Interclub upload system have been made over the last few months that took a lot of testing to get it right.
  • As we have lost the facility to copy award winning prints for the catalogue all Clubs must upload digital copies of print images. This includes representative images of any AVs submitted.
  • In the event that a camera manufacturer again offers a prize for the best image taken with their brand of camera all members should include EXIF Metadata (specifically camera type) with their images. Missing EXIF Metadata will not affect the Interclub entry but will affect the chance of getting that prize.
  • The Interclub upload system also now has the facility for clubs to complete the AV ID Information and application form online.
  • Clubs are asked to use Wetransfer or Dropbox to send the AVs to interclub@vaps.org.au instead of including a flash drive (memory stick) with the print bags.
  • All club logins older than 12 months will be removed. If you have to create a new login please ensure that you include the club name in your login ID. Club names should not be abbreviated, for example, to CCC for Casey Camera Club as we have several clubs that have similar abbreviations. The word “Casey” would be adequate or Casey CC. in 2021 we will remove all logins that do not have the club name in the Login ID.
  • Titles longer than 30 characters will be rejected by the upload system
  • Titles can only have letters, numbers and spaces. No special characters or punctuation marks will be accepted.

VAPS 2020 INTERCLUB

Most members are already aware the print section was cancelled, but the EDPI and AV competitions will continue.
Clubs have an extension of time to submit/revise EDPI entries until 30th April.

Revising EDPI entries may mean that clubs have to remove any print entries.

The EDPI and AV competitions will be judged remotely.

A PDF catalogue will be produced which will contain Year Bars lists and competition results. The Catalogue will be sent to all clubs by email. Meritorious and Service award citations will be published on the website.

Regards
Alfred Zommers
Interclub Director.
VAPS Website
The new website is now live.
https://vaps.org.au/

Please explore the site so that you become familiar with it. We have tried to make it user friendly. The development of the site is an ongoing process and as we find issues will update them.

Some areas of the site require a login. These areas are used by relevant members of your club committee.
  • Uploading club member images to the club gallery
  • Annual Club Affiliation (membership renewal)
  • Application for Year Bars and Awards
  • Club contact details
  • Victoria Judges list - for use by your competition steward
So if you can't login, please don't contact us as it is more than likely that your club committee has not given you login details as you don't require them.

Regards
Alfred

APJA - Judges Association
The APJA had planned to run a Level 5 on the 22nd March, we had good enrolment numbers and was all set to go, but as you would know it had to be cancelled due to the virus safety measures. We also planned two Image Evaluation workshops, one in April and one in June along with a Level 1 in May. Unfortunately unless there was a massive turnaround in the Virus issue these are all cancelled.

All events will be rescheduled to a time when safe to do so.

Some clubs are asking judges to judge images remotely either by writing comments or using some online means. Please be patient with judges in doing this, many judges may not be up to speed with online technologies.

Please also be aware of the large amount of time it takes to type up comments (especially with 1 finger). These are difficult times for all. We wish clubs all the best, we will come out the other end and get back to normal.

COVID-19 Update

Unfortunately, the Warragul National has been caught up with COVID-19.

This has resulted in our having to make a number of changes. We have APS approval to undertake distance judging. We are currently in the middle of judging the digital sections. At this stage we are not able to undertake print judging. We will continue to assess the situation.

All entrants have been notified of these arrangements. Those who entered the digital sections will receive an initial report card and we will be posting the acceptances on the Warragul National Web Site.

Regretfully, the exhibition planned for the end of May has had to be cancelled.

I am grateful to the entrants for their understanding and to our amazing judges whose professionalism is showing through in these difficult times.

I hope everyone is keeping safe.

Jane Woodcock, Chair, Warragul National

A Brief History:
Camera clubs have existed in Melbourne since the 1890’s and an umbrella organisation called the Victorian Photographic Affiliation was formed in 1908. This guided amateur photography in Victoria for forty years. The Victorian Association of Photographic Societies was formed on 27 September 1952 and comprised of 12 clubs. This has grown to more than 70 clubs in Jan 2020. VAPS is a non-profit association that is entirely self-funded. The Association is run by an elected Committee of Management which is responsible for the operations of the Association, and for ensuring the Association fulfils the objectives.
