ISCE Newsletter - April 2020

Dear ISCE Supporters,

As you know by now, ISCE 2020 has been cancelled along with many other conferences.  The situation in many countries is still worsening and it was clearly the correct decision to cancel in very early March.  It does seem a long time ago! I have, within the last 24 hours, been advised that the hotel in which we planned to hold the meeting is now closed until September1st.

I am sure many of you will be working under changed circumstances either clinically or perhaps in your home and we all hope that this crisis will not be overly prolonged though the feeling in Scotland is that we will be lucky to be “unlocked” fully by the end of June.

ISCE MEMBERSHIP
If you are working from home, access to some published material may be more difficult and this reminds me to advise that if you care to take out an annual membership to ISCE ($125), you would have personal access to the Journal of Electrocardiology  (JECG) from home and work, and would receive a printed copy bimonthly. This represents a considerable saving as opposed to taking out a subscription directly with the JECG.  I would underline the fact that there is no profit in this exercise for ISCE. It is a means of supporting your Society’s own journal, which is shared with the International Society of Electrocardiology, which similarly has had to cancel its proposed meeting in Brazil in June.  An annual membership can be taken out at:

ISCE 2020 PUBLICATION
The Board decided that there will not be any ISCE2020 conference related papers published this year in the usual way in what would have been a special supplement to the JECG. It was felt that under the circumstances, many authors would not be willing or have time to write a paper, reviewers might also be hard pressed to help, and those whose abstracts would have been published might wish to submit elsewhere if there were to be a chance of making a presentation. Of course, updated abstracts could be resubmitted next year if no suitable conference is available beforehand and the material has not been published in the interim!  On the other hand, if you wish to submit your paper directly to the JECG, you are of course free to do so at any time.  There is a submission track labelled ISCE and if you had been expecting to present your paper at ISCE2020, you could use this as a means of identifying your paper.  It would be reviewed in the usual way in that the editor would select referees and handle the paper via the JECG Editorial Board.

ISCE 2021
You will also be aware that ISCE has already set dates for the 2021 meeting in Tucson, Arizona from April 21st – 25th. I do hope that many of you will be able to attend next year and make up for the lack of attending ISCE this year. If you booked travel already for this year, you might be able to use this year’s ticket to rebook for next year.

ISCE BOARD MEETING
It is hoped that the Board of ISCE will be meeting by conference call around the end of April, at which time a new Board will be put in place as is customary at this time of year. Prior to that, I hope to circulate one further note summarising the “state of the Society” before handing over to a new President and Board.  I would like to do this because of the lack of such an opportunity at the cancelled AGM.

Meantime, I sincerely hope that you can avoid contracting the Covid19 virus.  It really is a most worrying time for every single one of us. We owe our sincere thanks to all of those who are helping to fight this war against the virus.

Kind Regards
Peter Macfarlane
