The Department of Treasury has released guidance and information on the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP).  As a reminder from previous e-mails, PPP loans are based on 2019 payroll and may be forgiven if a business maintains certain payroll numbers.  Here are some key steps to take NOW!

Review Guidance

We suggest business owners and managers review the following guidance published by the Treasury Department:

PPP Overview
PPP Information Sheet - Borrowers
PPP Information Sheet - Lenders (this will help you understand what your bank is doing)
PPP Application Form

These documents, plus additional information, can be found on the Treasury's website.

Gather Documents

Gather at least the following documents:

  • Form 941, Employer's Quarterly Federal Tax Return - 2019 Quarters 1-4
  • Form W3 and W2s
  • 2019 Health insurance costs to employer
  • 2019 Employer retirement contributions
  • Business Tax Returns - Last two filed returns
  • 2020 Year-to-Date Profit and Loss and Balance Sheet
  • Most recent lease statements
  • Most recent mortgage statements
  • Articles of organization
It's unknown exactly what documents banks will request, but it's better to have these documents ready than to scramble around looking for them during the application process.

Contact Your Bank

Most banks are requiring loan applicants to have an existing relationship with the bank.  Begin by visiting your bank's website to get more information.  Most banks are posting information about the PPP on their homepage.  It's recommended to visit your bank's website since most institutions are being overwhelmed by calls.  The application process opens later this week, so check your bank's website often for an online application.
