The Anatomy of the $2 Trillion
COVID-19 Stimulus Bill

The unprecedented response to the COVID-19 pandemic has prioritized keeping people apart to slow the spread of the virus. While measures such as business closures and travel restrictions are effective at fighting a pandemic, they also have a dramatic impact on the economy.

To help right the ship, the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act — also known as the CARES Act — was passed by U.S. lawmakers last week with little fanfare. The act became the largest economic stimulus bill in modern history, more than doubling the stimulus act passed in 2009 during the Financial Crisis.

Taking Care of Seniors
During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Stephanie Biddle - Content Manager
Part of the social distancing and stay-at-home order is to protect the most vulnerable in our community from disease, especially seniors who face a higher risk for severe illness and death from COVID-19. That compromise means not being able to visit them, and potentially puts them at risk for isolation, depression and losing their sense of connection to family and friends.

Michele Darwin, executive director of the Windward Foundation (www.windwardfoundation.org), a nonprofit organization that supports caregivers of Alzheimer’s patients, offered some expert advice for families.

“We encourage families to call often and if possible, get their elderly family members on FaceTime. We also encourage families to send care packages, cards or things that would brighten their day. When families do call, we encourage them to ask questions related to their own care and health.”

She encourages families to investigate telemedicine for their elder relatives and get permission for spouses or adult children to be on the call with the health professional. Limiting their exposure to busy waiting rooms is a good idea.  Some doctors and practitioners are using tools to check blood pressure and temperature via smart phones. One local volunteer group, TeleHealth Access for Seniors (you can find them on Facebook), is collecting old iPads, tablets and phones to give to seniors currently without these devices and is helping train them on how to use them for telemedicine.

For seniors that live in their own home, bring the family over for a social-distancing visit with everyone gathered outside, separated by six feet. Some families are coming over to the sidewalk in front of loved one’s homes carrying signs with loving messages, singing cheerful songs or bringing a favorite treat.

Most grocery stores are offering special hours for seniors to shop, but you can help limit their exposure to the public by doing their grocery shopping for them or helping them to order groceries via a delivery service.  If your loved one lives far away, there might be a neighbor or friend who can help or there are services such as Visiting Angels (www.visitingangels.com) which provides professional care for elders, including companionship, personal and hygiene assistance, light housekeeping and other supportive tasks. They can assist with seniors living in their own homes or in residential communities. These professional care workers are considered essential support staff at nursing homes and assisted living communities, so while you can’t visit and check on your loved one, they can.

The Mayflower in Winter Park (www.themayflower.com) has had to impose many social distancing measures to keep residents safe but are helping them to find crafts and other activities they can do in their homes to stay busy. Some residents have started sewing masks to donate to healthcare workers.

Other ideas that can help seniors stay productive and engaged is to volunteer to make phone calls for their church or place of worship or a nonprofit organization. Creating a virtual book club with friends or family members is another idea. If they have young grandchildren, maybe reading a bedtime story or playing a game together via FaceTime. Virtual classes or museum tours can also be part of a new daily routine, and staying active with virtual exercise classes, a printed exercise routine to do at home or regular walks outside can help.
