APRIL 2020: NEWSLETTER

LATEST NEWS

Like all other international federations, the main focus of the UIAA over recent weeks has been readjusting to a new routine following the global spread of COVID-19.

The UIAA Office staff have been working remotely for the past few weeks and continue to deliver full-time support to Commissions, members and partners. The UIAA Executive Board and the UIAA Office have both held regular online meetings to ensure an ongoing exchange of ideas and information.

The UIAA published a second COVID-19 statement on 23 March and a few days later launched a website page to provide the climbing community with updates. This resource covers not only news from the UIAA but details on measures implemented in different countries and inspiring stories of solidarity between members and communities. The resource will continue to evolve over the coming weeks. As the virus impacts different parts of the world at different times and diverse ways, this material and exchange of knowledge should prove invaluable.

DEDICATED COVID-19 RESOURCES

UIAA STATEMENTS, MEMBER ARTICLES AND CLIMBING MEDIA

A dedicated COVID-19 page has been created on the UIAA website to act as a resource for the international climbing community. It includes links to official UIAA statements, initiatives and measures implemented by UIAA Commissions and UIAA member federations, news on restrictions concerning mountain areas as well as articles from leading media titles. In this time of need, we can inspire each other.

The UIAA thanks all contributors to the page. There are currently articles available from UIAA members in different countries and continents with many more to come over the coming days. Likewise, further news on the status of projects - including the UIAA Mountain Protection Award - will be provided in due course.

Articles submitted, but not yet posted, will be published shortly.

PROJECT UPDATES

The section below provides a selection of links to some of the COVID-19 resources shared by the UIAA as well as status information about recent projects. As for many climbers spending time indoors is the current reality, the article from the UIAA Safety Commission on canyoning harnesses provides a reminder that now is a useful time to check equipment and gear. A number of climbing media have also produced interesting articles related to training indoors and mental health. There are updates also from the UIAA Ice Climbing Commission and about the UIAA Rock Climbing Festival Award. News on the status of other UIAA projects will be published shortly.
