4) Psychiatric Urgent Care Clinics - Mental Health and Addictions

COVID-19 Response Measure: Psychiatric Urgent Care Clinics
___________________________________________________________

As part of the province’s COVID-19 response Mental Health & Addictions are diverting patients who may require an acute mental health admission away from the emergency rooms to psychiatric urgent care clinics: located at the Hillsborough Hospital site and at Prince County Hospital.

Those individuals who require emergency medical stabilization (suicide attempts, severe intoxication, delirium and/or extreme disruptive behaviour) will still be seen at the emergency departments as usual.

These psychiatric urgent care clinics are to assist with the province’s COVID-19 response and to keep mental health and addictions patients distanced from COVID-19 patients who present at emergency rooms. All patients will be screened for COVID-19 prior to been seen at a psychiatric urgent care clinic.
  • Temporary Psychiatric Urgent Care Clinic locations are:
    • Psychiatric Urgent Care Clinic @ Hillsborough Hospital (as of April 1)
    • Psychiatric Urgent Care Clinic @ PCH (week of April 6th)

  • Hours of operation are 10 AM – 7 PM daily.

  • Psychiatrists are available on-call, via telehealth as required.

  • Clinical psychologists, crisis nurses, social workers, addictions workers and OT workers are all available as part of the multi-disciplinary teams at the clinics.
There are triage processes in place at the emergency rooms, at the urgent care clinics and in community to direct patients to the most appropriate level of care.

Individuals with non-urgent mental health and addictions cases not requiring admission will continue to be served via Community Mental Health Clinics; Walk-in/Call-In services currently provided in community.

Psychiatric Urgent Care has the same IT functionality as was formerly available to psychiatry in the ERs.

All affected internal and external stakeholders (e.g. EMS and Police) will be notified.

Mental health patients who are/were admitted to the QEH ED MUST be transported to other facilities by EMS.

6) Updating You on 211 PEI

March 25, 2020

I am pleased to provide you with this update about 211 services coming to Prince Edward Island.

While we had originally intended to activate the full 211 service basket today, we have made the difficult but responsible decision to NOT publicly launch the full service, and to activate only the website access to the service.

Given the current covid-19 health crisis, we have concerns about (1) introducing a new service in the midst of our current crisis, and confusing Islanders with another information source when the Government has been implementing additional sources; (2) providing Islanders with a way to connect to the many services available to them when the delivery of most of those services has been impacted by the crisis; and (3) providing a directory of services that is inaccurate based on so many daily changes to programming.

However, we do recognize that many community and government services continue to operate, even if in a revised manner, and that those who are still able to provide service are more overwhelmed than usual. The 211 PEI directory of services is the most up-to-date listing currently available, and even if Islanders are directed to services that are not currently available, at least they will know where they can get help once those services are available again.

Over the past year, our team has been working with our key partner, PEI's provincial government, and our service provider partners across the Island, to build this service that we believe will significantly help Islanders connect to the social, government and non-urgent health services they need quickly and easily.

As a signature service of the United Way of Prince Edward Island, 211 is all about helping Islanders, and the service providers who are supporting Islanders, get connected to the services they need to not only survive but thrive.

The remainder of this newsletter focuses on informing you about 211 PEI in general, and its current website service available to support our Island's service providers.

The launch of our full complement of the 211 PEI basket of services (website, contact center, email and text) will be launched at a later time as covid-19 response efforts wind down.

211 PEI - where your search starts when you don't know where to turn!

Sincerely,
David Webster
Director, 211 PEI

8) COVID-19 Response: United Way of PEI COMPASSION FUND FOR CHARITIES

United Way PEI is committed to the most marginalized in our community and recognizes the increased risk and disadvantage that poverty and other barriers create. As such and with the support of the government of PEI, private sector and individuals, we have launched the Atlantic Compassion Fund. This is in response to the current Coronavirus (COVID-19) health pandemic. To reduce the spread and impact of this virus, Government of PEI and the Chief Public Health Office have asked Islanders to make very significant changes, which are creating negative social, financial and emotional impacts for individuals and families. This Fund is meant to support organizations to mitigate and address those negative impacts.

This is a tiered response to address the most pressing needs of those most marginalized first, and then we will move to a response that will help serve some of the many people in community that will be impacted by this public health crisis as it continues to unfold. These funds will be available to registered charities serving marginalized community members across PEI.

10) March 30 Update from Confederation Centre of the Arts

March 30 Update from Confederation Centre of the Arts

The 2020 Charlottetown Festival is now scheduled
to begin first previews in late June

The Confederation Centre team is closely monitoring the COVID-19 situation each day. Following the advice of the Chief Public Health Officer, the Centre is encouraging everyone to stay safe and continue supporting one another through these unprecedented times.

CEO Steve Bellamy announced today that The Charlottetown Festival will run on a revised schedule, beginning in late June, pending further updates from the Chief Public Health Officer.

The Festival was originally to launch previews in early June for its flagship, Anne of Green Gables—The Musical™. Due to the impact of COVID-19, all performances of Anne of Green Gables—The Musical™ from June 3-23 have been cancelled, with previews now beginning on June 27.

At this time, all other shows in The Charlottetown Festival will run as scheduled, opening in late June and early July and running until September 25 and 26. The revised schedule will depend on how the situation evolves over the coming weeks.

  • For those patrons whose performances have been cancelled, the Box Office will be in touch in the coming weeks to discuss options. The Centre team is dealing with a high volume of calls and greatly appreciates the support of patrons to date.
“We respect that there is still a high degree of uncertainty about what will be possible in the late summer and fall,” offers Bellamy. “We are adjusting our plans as the situation develops, and we will continue to do so in the weeks and months ahead. Whenever it becomes safe to gather again, we want to be ready for our patrons, members, and artists. We are looking forward to sharing the joy we all experience when we engage together as a community with the arts.”

Currently, all Centre programming has been cancelled or delayed until further notice. The Centre building itself remains closed to the public based on guidance from Public Health, however many staff are working from home and available via email and phone.

Bellamy continues, “Although current events have been cancelled, we are planning, at this point, for a late June start to The 2020 Charlottetown Festival–so long as it safe to do so."

Please continue to visit the Centre website and Centre social media for up-to-date information on the Centre’s response to this evolving situation.

Confederation Centre wishes to acknowledge the Department of Canadian Heritage, the Government of P.E.I., and the City of Charlottetown for their continued support.

13) Women's Legal Education and Action Fund (LEAF): We'll continue our fight for substantive equality amid COVID-19 impacts

Dear friends,
As we enter another week of working remotely and physical distancing, our thoughts are with you – our donors and supporters – as well as with the most vulnerable among us who are being disproportionately affected by this pandemic. We hope that you are safe, healthy, and coping with the demands of physical distancing so that we can help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The LEAF team continues to work remotely, and adjust to this new reality, which is changing day by day. One thing, however, remains the same - and that is our commitment to advocating for the most vulnerable and all those disproportionately affected by systemic inequality.

At LEAF, we are used to seeing things through an equality and gendered lens. This view is more important than ever. As with most crises, some people are more vulnerable than others. The impact of COVID-19 will be felt differently, depending on many factors, including employment and housing stability, and accessible and strong health care systems.

The most vulnerable members of our communities will face the greatest challenges and risk of harm during this crisis, including those who have pre-existing  illnesses, live with disabilities, must self-isolate with their abusive partners, are confined to prisons or detention centres, live without job security or safe housing, or are called upon to care for those who have fallen ill. We must guard against this pandemic exacerbating the already existing systemic inequalities.

At LEAF, we will keep fighting for pay equity and pension equality, and highlight how women will significantly carry the burden of care giving and job losses, because this pandemic will intensify the economic barriers women already face.

At LEAF, we will keep fighting for the security and safety of women, and highlight how shelters and other services for women facing intimate partner abuse need to be supported, because home is not safe for everyone.

At LEAF, we will keep fighting against the racist and sexist myths and stereotypes that exist about Indigenous women in the legal system, because Indigenous women and girls face a higher risk of infection and death in this pandemic.

For now, our main challenge is to help each other weather the impacts of this pandemic and ensure that the most vulnerable are not left behind in the process. At LEAF we will continue to fight for those most impacted by COVID-19 and demand structural change.

LEAF will continue to play a vital role in ensuring that the actions taken to address COVID-19 are understood through an equality and gendered lens. LEAF will continue to advocate for the equality rights of women and girls through this crisis, and your continued support for LEAF is more important than ever.

We hope you all stay safe, keep washing your hands, and maintain physical distancing, while staying socially connected and informed.

In solidarity,

Megan Stephens
Executive Director & General Counsel

15) Let’s Fill Facebook with Poems for Poetry Month

April 1, 2020 at 6am until April 14 at 7pm
Online

The PEI Writers’ Guild Board of Directors have been thinking of ways to connect the writing community across PEI at a time when we’re not meeting face to face, and we’re starting with the poets. April is poetry month, after all!

Here’s how it works:

1. Take a video of yourself (or someone else) reading a poem. You can read an original poem of yours or share a favourite poem, penned by someone else (just please state who, to give them credit).

2. Send to us (peiwritersguild@gmail.com)

Throughout the month of April, we’ll post these videos over on our main PEI Writers’ Guild Facebook page. Feel free to share them and fill Facebook with poetry.

Tip: Please try to keep your video under 60 seconds—these are meant to be short videos.

ALSO, If you are a poet and would like to host a live reading event, we would love to support you. Please email us at peiwritersguild@gmail.com and we can chat logistics.

Remember, as Oscar Wilde once said, “a poet can survive everything but a misprint.”

Let’s lift the Island spirits through poetry! Who’s in?

NOTE: Facebook only allows Events to be in 2-week spurts, so we'll repost this half-way through the month.  (Source Facebook event)
