Editorial

The COVID 19 crisis is turning everything upside-down, which is why we have decided to postpone the long-awaited EADI/ISS General Conference for a full year: Not only because of the uncertainty regarding the general lock-down, but, more importantly, due to our commitment to leave no-one behind: especially the Global South is hit hard by the current crisis, and we were hoping to welcome as many participants as possible from countries of the South. Apart from that, we - like everybody else - are currently looking into options to offer further events online and to promote the online-activities of our members. To stay informed, please watch our space: news are coming soon!
#eadi2020iss becomes #eadi2021iss
The unanimous decision by EADI and ISS to postpone the joint General Conference in The Hague from June/July 2020 to 5-8 July 2021 also implies that the Development Dialogue (PhD conference) as well as other events linked to the conference will be postponed to next year. Our priority will be to raise additional funding to actively involve Southern-based researchers, as these are mostly affected. All participants with accepted papers, panel convenors, as well as registered participants will be informed separately over the next few weeks. EADI will also approach panel convenors individually to critically review their planned panels and to explore whether a new call for panels and papers is needed. Registered participants can choose to get a refund or  re-register for 2021 at no extra cost. Read more
Statement on COVID 19: Solidarity with the Most Vulnerable
In the light of the heavy implications of the COVID 19 crisis and the responses to it, EADI has issued a statement of solidarity, particularly with the most vulnerable: "Those who do not have time to reflect as they continue their daily struggle. They have been denied the benefits of so-called development in our world of inequality and social injustices and now face barriers erected out of fear or ignorance or disrespect of life. (...) The world-wide crisis risks reinforcing North/ South asymmetries and inequalities in all areas and societies. It risks exacerbating underlying problems, and insular mentalities and deepening we-they divides. All this is the opposite of unity, of solidarity, of social justice and human dignity. We need to use the challenges as an opportunity to reconsider what “development” means and what the implications for “development studies” are. Read the full statement

Insecurity, Dispossession, Depletion: Women’s Experiences of Post-War Development in Myanmar: This article explores the gendered dynamics of Myanmar’s post-war economic reforms through an analysis of women’s experiences of development in Kayah (Karenni) state. In Myanmar, ceasefires and a reduction of armed violence combined with state-driven economic liberalization reforms are conditioned by, but also contribute to remake, gendered relations of power, privilege and marginalization.
