Warm greetings from Thompsons Africa! I trust this communication finds you safe and in good health.

These are indeed testing times for all of us across the world, but in the midst of any crisis there are always lessons to be learnt, particularly during these unprecedented times that directly affect our tourism industry.

Here in South Africa, we have far less confirmed cases of the virus but we are feeling the pain nevertheless as we too are locked down for another 15 days, with the real possibility of this being extended. We sanitize everything we can, we queue to buy essentials, people are moving around with protective gear and our roads and airports are deserted.  However, given all of this, we strongly believe that we must look forward and focus on the future to a time when travel will return to normal.

At Thompsons Africa we believe that ‘TOUGH TIMES DON’T LAST. TOUGH TEAMS DO’. We live this mantra daily.  We are making sure that we will be ready and first out of the starting blocks when the travel bans are lifted.

All of our teams in every department are all functioning as per normal.  The wonder of technology allows us all to continue our work remotely as we engage in regular, productive video discussions and brainstorming sessions, finding the best solutions for our business and yours.

From a procurement perspective we are actively working with all of our suppliers in the Southern Africa region, navigating the multiple challenges we currently face. These include the following:

• Consideration of the waiver of cancellation fees.
• Re-booking to alternative future dates where possible and negotiating rate holds for those affected bookings.
• Re-negotiating all 2021 rates.  Our ultimate goal is to achieve rate holds (or better) based on 2020 rates. It is important to note that this is an ongoing process which requires various stakeholders at supplier level to make final calls on these negotiations. We need to give our suppliers time to focus on consolidating their positions before we can formulate a successful plan for the future.

In the interim, if you have any current frustrations or challenges, please bring these to our attention so that we can act swiftly to resolve them. Additionally, if you have any ideas, comments or suggestions please step forward with these – we welcome all input in our endeavour to find solutions!

Yes, we are in an uncertain period, but remain positive, focused and know that resilience will yield results for us all.

We eagerly await for the time when Thompsons Africa can welcome back your precious guests to our amazing part of the world.  Southern Africa will make them feel free again. We are a destination that continues to astonish with breathtaking panoramic vistas, a deep proud heritage and spectacular wildlife.

In the meantime, I would like to share this inspiring video……. enjoy!

Stay safe and best personal regards,

Jonathan Gadiah
