Spring 2020 Graduation to Celebrate Student Achievements Virtually 

ASU's spring 2020 commencement and convocation ceremonies will have many of the familiar feelings as past commencements: graduates will hear their names, relatives will cry and caps will be decorated. But it will also be unique. The May 11 event will be an online celebration, a break from tradition due to the spread of the novel coronavirus that is making its way around the globe.

ASU Initiates Emergency Financial Aid Consideration Program

ASU recognizes that these are challenging economic times for many families. ASU's Financial Aid and Scholarship Services has initiated the ASU Emergency Financial Aid Consideration Program. This program has been created to address the concerns of families who have decreased income due to job loss. If you are unsure if your situation fits the criteria for a special circumstance, please call Financial Aid and Scholarship Services at 855-278-5080 or visit them at any of ASU's four campus locations to talk with a financial aid staff member for further guidance on your particular situation.



UCRC Faculty Affiliate Ariane Middel Awarded NSF CAREER Award  

Ariane Middel, Urban Climate Research Center Faculty Affiliate and Assistant Professor of the School of Arts, Media and Engineering, Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts is one of 15 Arizona State University recipients of the National Science Foundation Early Career Development (CAREER) Awards for 2020.

The NSF CAREER Program identifies the nation’s most promising young faculty members and provides them with funding to pursue outstanding research, excellence in teaching and the integration of education and research. 

The goal of Middel's grant is to advance understanding of how the built environment impacts heat and human thermal exposure in cities. The project will use MaRTy (a mobile weather station) and novel modeling approaches (deep learning) to assess how people experience heat in the summer.

SGSUP's Aryn Musgrave Featured on School of Human Evolution Social Change Career Panel 

On March 25, Aryn Musgrave, GIS Coordinator for the School of Geographical Students and Urban Planning, participated in the School of Human Evolution Social Change Career Spring Career Panel, which focused on social science careers that utilize math. Accessibility Survey for People with Disabilities – Please complete by April 15th

MUEP student, Jonathan Garrett is helping to survey people with disabilities to understand which elements of the built environment facilitate or create barriers to their mobility. This project specifically addresses access along streets and sidewalks. The survey will be used to define criteria used in an infrastructure analysis and the creation of an infrastructure geodatabase. Please complete by April 15th. Take the survey here. 

ASU Student Heat Survey 
Are you an undergraduate or graduate student at ASU’s Tempe campus and 18 years of age or older? You are eligible to take the following survey on the effects of heat on ASU students and be entered for a chance to win one of eight $25 Amazon gift cards. The survey will take about 5-10 minutes. (Fall 2020) New online course: GLG 327/SOS 374 Earth's Critical Zone
The earth’s near-surface environment (the “critical zone”) supports most life and is the dynamic interface between the solid earth and its fluid envelopes where much of the geologic record is produced.  This course focuses on how changes to the environment manifest themselves in the earth's critical zone -- which is essential to planning for how to respond to environmental change. More info

 

(Summer 2020) Undergraduate Research Opportunity, NSF Spatiotemporal Innovation Center - Fairfax VA, Cambridge MA, or virtual
The NSF Spatiotemporal Innovation Center (STC) is looking for 2-4 undergraduate research assistants to serve as NSF REU Fellows from June 2020 to August 2020. NSF REU Student interns will work in a team with graduate students, postdocs, and faculty at one of the two center sites and will conduct research related to spatiotemporal issues. If the campuses are still closed by summer, participation will be virtual from each participants' own location. Must be US citizen or permanent resident; underrepresented groups encouraged to apply. The Office of Applied Innovation will support two to four graduate students to join the Office for an immersive training program that will empower them to advance their own applied project(s) in service of the Office mission.
