Food Safety and COVID-19

Beware of Fraudulent Coronavirus Tests, Vaccines and Treatments
Fraudulent COVID-19 products can come in many varieties, including dietary supplements and other foods, as well as products claiming to be tests, drugs, medical devices, or vaccines. Because COVID-19 has never been seen in humans before, there are currently no vaccines to prevent or drugs to treat COVID-19 approved by the FDA. The FDA is working with medical product developers to rapidly advance the development and availability of vaccines and treatments for COVID-19. Read more. Also in Spanish, Simplified Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean and Tagalog.

Food Safety and Availability During the Coronavirus Pandemic
The FDA is working in many ways to help keep people safe while the nation is coping with the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19). Food availability and food safety are vitally important to our well-being, and the FDA is working hard to help ensure the foods you, your family, and your pets eat are safe and available. Read more. Also in Spanish and Simplified Chinese.

Safely Using Hand Sanitizer
Each of us can help stop the spread of COVID-19 disease by washing our hands regularly with soap and water for 20 seconds – especially after going to the bathroom, before eating, and after coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose. If soap and water are not available, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that consumers use alcohol-based hand sanitizers containing at least 60% alcohol. Read more. Also in Spanish and Simplified Chinese.

Food Safety and Availability During the Coronavirus Pandemic

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is working in many ways to help keep people safe while the nation is coping with the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19). Food availability and food safety are vitally important to our well-being, and the FDA is working hard to help ensure the foods you, your family, and pets eat are safe and available.

Here are three things to know about food availability and safety as the nation copes with the pandemic.

School Meal Sites Providing Free Meals for Children Throughout California

Are you looking for meal sites during the emergency COVID-19 school closures? The California Department of Education (CDE) shows meal sites available through its free CA Meals for Kids mobile app. Select Emergency Meal Sites in the app that is updated daily.

The Dairy Council of California can also help you find meals near you-- they provide a HealthyEating.org/SchoolMeals landing page that comprehensively aggregates all feeding sites throughout California that provide children with free meals. The format is web-based and mobile-friendly, and allows users to easily self-navigate to find the closest location to their home.

Given the tremendous impact COVID-19 is having on planned spring UC Master Gardener events The Senate has voted unanimously to pass a $2.2 trillion package of measures to fight the coronavirus pandemic and provide assistance to industries, small businesses and workers affected by the pandemic. The legislation adds $450 million for the Emergency Food Assistance Program, $200 million for food assistance for Puerto Rico and other US territories, $100 million for food distribution on American Indian reservations and more than $15 billion in additional funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and Child Nutrition Program.

Rethink Your Drink Day 2020 Cancelled

Due to the evolving situation with COVID-19, as well as guidance from the Governor’s Office and the office of California Department of Public Health Director Sonia Angell, we are cancelling Rethink Your Drink Day (RYDD) 2020. We continue to be impressed by your tireless effort to inspire Californians to consume more water and fewer sugary drinks. Nonetheless, as leaders in public health, we want to comply with the guidance and direction we are asking the public to follow to help slow the spread of COVID-19.

Please Order Your Event Box for Future Use
We invite UCCE counties, per their capacity and discretion, to place orders for the Rethink Your Drink Day event box and to receive and store the materials for a possible healthy beverage promotion after the pandemic has passed.
