Dear <<First Name>>,

Deacon Thinkin’

I stepped out of my apartment yesterday to embark on my daily walk and was stunned by the silence. I was the only person out, and I do mean only! I looked in all directions and as far as I could see, nada! No people, no cars, no sound, even the birds were silent. It was scary.

My co-op is directly across the street from MetroNorth train station, it is but one minute for me to catch a train to the city. I walked to the parking lot which on a weekday at 5 PM is packed with over 300 cars, it was empty, like, not one car empty.

Walking the length of the parking area I was enveloped in quiet. It occurred to me that this is a Sabbath time, a time to listen for God, a time to be in the moment. I wonder then and now, in this fallow time from work for many of us, is perhaps an opportunity to allow God into our hearts, like never before.

I have heard from many that the closets are cleaned out, the drawers and cabinets organized, books have finally been or are being read, the Zoom meetings are taking up a lot of time. But maybe we have to slow down a bit, maybe we should spend more time with God too.

We heard just two days ago that the worst is yet to come, and that is causing much fear and distress, uncertainty, and doubt. None of us ever thought we would be struggling physically, emotionally, economically, and spiritually, to survive a pandemic in our lifetime. Some didn't even know what that word meant three months ago.

My plea to you is to somehow make the time to include God in your day, I have no doubt you are all praying and praying hard. Be good to yourself, include scripture reading time every day. Look to the Psalms. The following few may be helpful; Psalm 56:3-4, 91, 27, 23, 121, 62:6-9, 31:24.

Be kind to yourself and take some time away from daily chores, fears and worry. Allow God to come into your heart.

It is in the silence that we hear the comforting voice of God and are wrapped in his love.

God’s peace,
Deacon Lynn
