Plan of Study: We will discuss the introduction to the book and the framework for the study at our first meeting. The remaining four meetings will focus on the reading and experience of the four noble truths (one truth per meeting). The format will be guided discussion and sharing in triads- the intent is to share with our community our collective experience of the application of the 4 noble truths in our daily lives- implementation and insight. There will be short handouts provided to complete as homework for each meeting after the introductory session.
Four Noble Truths : The Buddha’s first teaching after he found freedom from suffering.
-
Dukkha is interwoven in the moments of your life.
-
The cause of your dukkha is clinging to desired objects and states of being.
-
You can release dukkha by letting go of clinging to those desires.
-
There is an Eightfold Path from dukkha to freedom that you can follow.
Facilitated by Melinda R. McKinney
There is NO FEE for this study group. The teachings of the Buddha have been sustained by the 2,500 year old tradition of dana, a Pali word meaning "generosity.” Participants are encouraged to help FIMC facilitate such programs as well as the facilitator by offering donations at the end of the meeting. In the act of giving, we develop our ability to let go, cultivate a spirit of caring, and honor our inter-connectedness.
The Buddha advised us to investigate the dharma ourselves.
Let’s try it and share what we learn with each other!
