Many of you will be aware of the Government's intention to create a hybrid learning environment for schools at Alert Level 3. Schools (children in Years 1-10) and Early Childhood Education centres can safely open when the country moves to Level 3, but our school will have limited capacity to support this. Children should learn at home if possible. In a school as large as ours, this move requires significant planning and our staff are currently developing the solutions that best fit the needs of our community.
Next week, once the information becomes clearer and we have more direction on what schooling under a Level 3 Alert looks like, we will be surveying our school community to find out exactly who will be attending South Wellington Intermediate School. We understand that your circumstances may change after you complete the survey, so of course, we will be able to make allowances for this.
The Ministry of Education has assured us that we will have some time to prepare for physically re-opening the school and welcoming back on site some of our staff and some, but not all, of our children/students.
Assuming the alert level does change, current planning assumptions are that staff will have Thursday 23 and Friday 24 April to fully access our site and undertake a property inspection and necessary maintenance and cleaning. Monday 27 April is a public holiday (ANZAC Day observed) and Tuesday 28 April will be a teacher-only day. These dates have come from the Minister of Education, Chris Hipkins, who announced these last week. I will confirm these with you as soon as possible, but currently, this information is simply an indication for you to work with.
If these dates are accurate, then we anticipate Wednesday 29 April will be the first day that some of our students will be attending school. This information may change after the announcement on Monday and I will write to you again when I know more about this.
