Neighbourhood Watch in
Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby

eNewsletter #445 - 21 April 2020

This weekly eNewsletter is compiled by Neighbourhood Watch volunteers as a service for residents in Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby council areas. The eNewsletter is a new type of Neighbourhood Watch; utilising the available technology to keep people more connected and up-to-date with local crime and safety issues.

The eNewsletter includes a selection of posts from the
Ku-ring-gai PAC Facebook page (also known as 'eyewatch'), primarily for those not familiar with Facebook. We add anything interesting from a Neighbourhood Watch point-of-view - this could be a local newspaper article, a roadwork warning, crime prevention tip(s), an upcoming Neighbourhood Watch meeting, Q&As from residents, or an item from an other Police command ("Crooks know no boundaries!").

🚓 Have you seen anything we should share with the community? Please email our NHW in Ku-ring-gai & Hornsby volunteers. We do value your contributions. Thank you for your support.
🚓 Please feel free to share/forward this eNewsletter with your friends, family, colleagues and neighbours.

17 April, from the Australian Federal Police (AFP): Here’s another Scam Alert.
Since 9 April, the ACSC has received more than 1,900 reports of an alarming new ‘sextortion’ scam. This is what’s doing the rounds.

The scam:
  • - Uses a tactic known as ‘sextortion’ – a form of online blackmail
  • -Threatens to reveal intimate images online, often to friends and family, unless a ransom is quickly paid (often in cryptocurrency)
  • - Typically they don’t actually have the intimate images
  • - Claims to have compromised a computer, or other electronic device, and include either a password or partial password the recipient has used in the past.
What to do:
  • - If you receive one of these emails, DO NOT give the perpetrator any money or images
  • - Delete the email and DO NOT respond
  • - If a blackmailer is threatening to reveal intimate images of you online, DO NOT give in to their demands. Report it to the Office of the eSafety Commissioner
  • - If you have concerns about your physical safety, call Triple Zero (000) or contact your local police
  • - And we want you to read this next bit carefully…DO NOT use this post as a platform for victim blaming. Please think of others before you comment.
If you have experienced image-based abuse, you can also contact the Office of the eSafety Commissioner to report and seek support, including links to counselling support services here.

17 April, received from Ku-ring-gai Council: Good morning All,

I am sending this to all organisations on our community list, as there may be seniors known to your group who may be having difficulties due to the current social distancing requirements. We’re trying to let all those who may need some support in staying home, know that there are organisations that can provide services such as deliveries of meals (and toilet paper), shopping-by-list, pharmacy and spectacles prescriptions pick-up, emergency food and essentials, and library books to your front door.

Contact details are on Council’s Useful information for Seniors webpage
here.

Over-65s can receive tasty, freshly cooked meals from Meals on Wheels during this time without the need to register with My Aged Care. Could you please forward this information, below and attached, to anyone in your groups who might need assistance? See Council webpages for additional resources such as exercise-at-home videos, on-line Resilience workshops and on-line relaxation workshops – Useful information for Seniors and Life Online/ Activities at Home. Kind regards, Robin

16 April, shared from the NSW Police: SCAM ALERT!
Government impersonation scams are rife during the COVID-19 pandemic, including this fake ATO email claiming to offer a tax credit due to COVID-19. Don’t click on any links or provide personal or financial information. Info via Scamwatch.

16 April, from NSW Road Safety: Today is the 1st annual National Low Speed Vehicle Run Over Prevention Awareness Day launched by the Georgina Josephine Foundation in memory of Georgina who was 15 months old when fatally injured in the driveway of her family’s home in 2011.
With more children and families now at home, it’s really important to remember that driveways and footpaths aren’t safe places for children to play. Take care when reversing out of driveways and always check your blind spots. They’re counting on you.
Shared from Aussies & Kiwis for ANZACs: Let's get everyone to get out and support our ANZACs.
Get the kids up for this one day and let them know why and keep the history of our Nation remembered. We are one, We are together. (in keeping social distancing.)

14 April, shared with permission from Thornleigh, Westleigh and Normanhurst group: I live near Pennant Hills HS and we have a council clean up this week.
Yesterday, someone unloaded a whole heap of junk onto my nature strip and drove off. It includes some rusty reo and a lot of green waste, none of which will be taken by council. If anyone saw a neighbour load up their car with broken roller blinds, rusty reo, and boxes full of hundreds of half dead palm leaves, let me know! I'd love to return it.....

Neighbourhood Watch's comment: The easiest way to report illegal dumping is using the Snap Send Solve App. It takes your photo and attaches it to a pre-formatted email. Then sends it to the appropriate council.
Unfortunately our Neighbourhood Watch volunteers can no longer access the Hornsby Advocate or North Shore Times online, as it is via subscription only.
We do not have a subscription.
