COVID-19 Community Update

As you know the legislature is in recess until the current COVID-19 either passes or winds down. Although Senate offices are closed, my staff and I are still working on behalf of our district. We are still answering voicemails and emails in order to take care of your questions and listen to your concerns as we tread through the uncertain waters of COVID-19. |

Coronavirus Cases in Hawai'i
|

|
|
COVID-19 is spreading globally, nationally, and locally. While the majority of cases identified in Hawaii have been introduced into our state by travelers, especially Hawaii residents, we all need to practice social distancing (i.e., maintaining at least 6 ft distance or 2 arm’s length from others) as well as other important infection prevention measures (e.g., wash hands, clean surfaces regularly) to prevent widespread community transmission. Social distancing can reduce the spread of disease, prevent our healthcare system from being overburdened, and protect the most vulnerable members in our community from infection. If you get sick, please stay at home and get rest and drink plenty of fluids. If you are older or have an underlying medical condition and become ill, call your doctor. Daily updates can be found on the Hawaii Department of Health's website.

Hawaiʻi Island United Way is announcing the ʻEleu Grant program, to quickly get grants of up to $2,500 to the front lines in our community with a one-page application and one-page report.
ʻEleu Grants are funded by the new Hawaiʻi Island Recovery Fund. This fund, seeded by contributions from Hawaiʻi Island United Way and Hawaiian Electric, will be used to fund community response efforts to this and future crises and disasters on Hawaiʻi Island. Contributions to this fund can be made at HIUW.org. Interested organizations and efforts can submit signed applications to cpo@hiuw.org, and they will be considered by the Community Building Committee which will be meeting weekly.

Liliʻuokalani Trust is providing kōkua through one-time emergency stabilization financial assistance for those who qualify. Eligible families must have a Hawaiian kamaliʻi (child ages birth to 17 years old) residing in the household of the requestor and they must have legal authority to request this assistance; There must be a direct financial impact resulting from COVID-19 (e.g., job loss, reduced hours, quarantine). Requestors are asked to provide documentation, if possible. The requestor and kamaliʻi are not currently enrolled in Liliʻuokalani Trust services (e.g., case management, youth development programs).
