Suddenly 65 Resource Newsletter

April 16th

 A letter from our editor:

All of California is still on a full Shelter-in-Place order, and we're all in it together. It is vital to the health of the community to keep following these guidelines as long as the California and local government tells you to.

Suddenly 65 is here to try to alleviate some of the loneliness that comes with staying in our homes.  That is our main focus rather than hitting you with a lot of information.  We're here to have some fun.

You will see some repeated information from last week, but be assured there is new information and new tools listed here this week.  We are doing our best to include good current information, without removing resources that are helpful.

Hunker down and be safe,
Alisha and the whole Suddenly 65 Family

PS: Since we've jam packed this week's newsletter with helpful resources, please remember to forward this to a friend who might need it.

STAY HOME.  IT MATTERS.

Please take care to wash your hands frequently and for at least 20 seconds at a time whenever possible.

Seniors and those with compromised immune systems are at highest risk, so please exercise reasonable caution when going into public spaces.

  • Stay home if you are sick. Sick people make well people sick.
  • If you have mild symptoms, there may be no need to go to a medical facility to see a doctor.
  • Certain patients, such as the elderly, those that are immune compromised or have underlying health conditions should call their doctor earlier.
  • If you have questions, please call the clinic or your doctor before going in. If you do not have a healthcare provider, call 211 for assistance finding support near you.
  • Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Get immunized against the flu to protect yourself and your family, and reduce the potential strain on the healthcare system, which may be impacted by COVID-19 concerns.

Face Covering & Mask Protocol

County Health Officials have urged that residents should not to buy surgical or N95 masks typical used by front-line care providers and first responders, but can instead use household items such as scarves, bandannas or fabric.

Los Angeles City has started the #LAProtects initiative in order to encourage residents to be creative in creating and using their own face coverings. We encourage our residents to do the same in order to make sure that our front-line workers have access to the supplies that they need. Although there are a lot of different videos and websites showing how to make masks, please use caution when selecting which websites you go on, it is recommended that you only go to a trusted website.

Officials warn that wearing a mask is not a shield, and it doesn’t replace the request that you stay at home, practice social distancing, use hand washing as your major means to make sure you’re not infecting yourself after touching something or someone who may be infected, and that you’re self-isolating and self-quarantined when it’s appropriate.

COVID-19: Medication tips

During these tough times, your health remains our top priority. We're being asked to stay home as much as possible.

The COVID-19 situation is changing quickly. We're learning more together. Social distancing is now part of our normal day.

Here are some medication tips from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:
Ask your doctor if you are able to get extra medication to have at least a 30-day supply on hand.
Keep some over-the-counter medications for fever and other symptoms at home.

How Do Seniors Shelter in Place without Feeling Alone or Isolated?
By Sandy Rosenholz, Senior Resources CA, Inc.

Dealing with the COVID-19 crisis is challenging enough for most of us who must stay home and shelter in place without the option of going to school, work, the golf course, the mall, or visiting friends or family, but seniors face even more obstacles. Many have underlying health conditions or suppressed immune systems that make them extra vulnerable to COVID 19, and are afraid that socializing will bring on those devastating health concerns. On the flip side, seniors are also among the most likely to feel cut off from family and friends. How can they avoid feeling desperate while keeping a social distance with others?

That seems to be the $64,000 question. And it is even more of a concern for those who live alone, about a third of the senior population, says the Administration for Community Living’s Administration on Aging. Whether they live independently or have caregiver assistance, drastic changes to their routine can be both physically and emotionally devastating.

The Health Resources and Services Administration, an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, found that social isolation and loneliness can be more dangerous to a senior’s health than obesity or smoking 15 cigarettes per day. Other research studies have reported:
  • Increases in heart attacks (29%) and strokes (32%) as well as ties to high cholesterol, diabetes, and dementia.
  • Elder abuse is more likely when others are not checking on a senior.
  • Financial scammers use a senior’s loneliness to their advantage.
  • Seniors still working or enrolled in daycare programs lose their ability to have that human connection.
  • A study by the AARP Public Policy Institute, Stanford University and Harvard found that Medicare spends about $6.7 million more on socially isolated seniors than it does on other seniors.

How We All Can Pitch in to Alleviate a Senior’s Stress

Judi Lirman, a Woodland Hills, CA-based Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, offers the following suggestions for what seniors and their loved ones can do during this transitional time that will reduce stress and anxiety.

First, here are some simple, but caring measures family members, friends, and caregivers can take to help seniors during this health crisis:
  • Create new routines to establish a sense of normalcy.
  • Treat them with extra TLC; this is a scary time.
  • Be present when calling or spending time with them online.
  • Assure them that they a support system who will take care of their needs. For example: whom they can call to chat, contact their doctor or caregiver, reach a helpline, instructions on how to use the phone or internet, and how to access Skype, Zoom, Face Time, etc. Prepare multiple copies of these notes in case they get misplaced.
  • Answer their questions directly and clearly.
  • Check in with them about how their physical and emotional health.
  • Suggest activities to keep their mind off their physical isolation such as reading a book, taking a walk, calling someone to chat, doing laundry, exercising, anything safe that does the trick.
  • Talk to them about how they have previously weathered storms in their lives and how they moved forward.

According to Lirman, it is just as important to give seniors the power to reduce panic and anxiety. Here are some tips:
  • Talk down a fear. Example: “No one will call me. Is that true? Ruthie called me two days ago. Ben seems to call every week. But I miss my grandkids. I keep getting pictures of them from my daughter-in-law, and they call me. I could call my friend Toby to talk. The young family down the block or my family calls to ask if I need anything. The truth is I am hearing from several people regularly, maybe too much. But I know I can always call or email them if I want. Maybe I don’t have to worry about this.
  • Practice belly breathing, a relaxation technique. This helps calm the nerves.
    • Lie down or sit comfortably.
    • Close your eyes and breathe in through your nose for a count of 3 or 4 and fill your stomach with air like a balloon.
    • Breathe out through your mouth for a count of 5 or 6 and watch the “balloon” deflate. It’s essential to take the extra few seconds to breathe out to avoid hyperventilating or lightheadedness.
    • If you can’t belly breathe, sit or lie down and breathe without inflating your stomach, but with the same slowing rhythm.
  • Contact someone they know and offer reassurance to them that this too shall pass.

Be aware that is a scary time for everyone. Let’s make the extra effort to check on those who live alone, especially seniors. To keep our mind and body healthy, we all must maintain social contacts in whatever form they may be. Stay home and stay safe.

Information on Covid-19 From Johns Hopkins Hospital:

* The virus is not a living organism, but a protein molecule (DNA) covered by a protective layer of lipid (fat), which, when absorbed by the cells of the ocular, nasal or buccal mucosa, changes their genetic code. (mutation) and convert them into aggressor and multiplier cells.

* Since the virus is not a living organism but a protein molecule, it is not killed, but decays on its own. The disintegration time depends on the temperature, humidity and type of material where it lies.

* The virus is very fragile; the only thing that protects it is a thin outer layer of fat. That is why any soap or detergent is the best remedy, because the foam CUTS the FAT (that is why you have to rub so much: for 20 seconds or more, to make a lot of foam).

By dissolving the fat layer, the protein molecule disperses and breaks down on its own.

* HEAT melts fat; this is why it is so good to use water above 77 degrees Fahrenheit for washing hands, clothes and everything. In addition, hot water makes more foam and that makes it even more useful.

* Alcohol or any mixture with alcohol over 65% DISSOLVES ANY FAT, especially the external lipid layer of the virus.

* Any mix with 1 part bleach and 5 parts water directly dissolves the protein, breaks it down from the inside.

* Oxygenated water helps long after soap, alcohol and chlorine, because peroxide dissolves the virus protein, but you have to use it pure and it hurts your skin.

* NO BACTERICIDE OR ANTIBIOTIC SERVES. The virus is not a living organism like bacteria; antibodies cannot kill what is not alive.

* NEVER shake used or unused clothing, sheets or cloth. While it is glued to a porous surface, it is very inert and disintegrates only
-between 3 hours (fabric and porous),
-4 hours (copper and wood)
-24 hours (cardboard),
- 42 hours (metal) and
-72 hours (plastic).

But if you shake it or use a feather duster, the virus molecules float in the air for up to 3 hours, and can lodge in your nose.

* The virus molecules remain very stable in external cold, or artificial as air conditioners in houses and cars.

They also need moisture to stay stable, and especially darkness. Therefore, dehumidified, dry, warm and bright environments will degrade it faster.

* UV LIGHT on any object that may contain it breaks down the virus protein. For example, to disinfect and reuse a mask is perfect. Be careful, it also breaks down collagen (which is protein) in the skin.

* The virus CANNOT go through healthy skin.

* Vinegar is NOT useful because it does not break down the protective layer of fat.

* NO SPIRITS, NOR VODKA, serve. The strongest vodka is 40% alcohol, and you need 65%.

* LISTERINE IF IT SERVES! It is 65% alcohol.

* The more confined the space, the more concentration of the virus there can be. The more open or naturally ventilated, the less.

* You have to wash your hands before and after touching mucosa, food, locks, knobs, switches, remote control, cell phone, watches, computers, desks, TV, etc. And when using the bathroom.

* You have to Moisturize dry hands from so much washing them, because the molecules can hide in the micro cracks. The thicker the moisturizer, the better.

* Also keep your NAILS SHORT so that the virus does not hide there.

Los Angeles City Advisory: COVID-19: How to stay safe and help prevent spread of the novel coronavirus

Para leer esta información en esp añol, visite lamayor.org/coronavirus

Good afternoon,

The City of Los Angeles is working closely with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health and the County Office of Emergency Management to share updates, guidance and information about the novel coronavirus and COVID-19.

What we know:

  • COVID-19 symptoms include fever, cough, and shortness of breath — and may appear in as few as 2 days or as long as 14 days after exposure.
  • Person-to-person spread mainly occurs via respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes (similar to how influenza and other respiratory pathogens spread). In rare cases, it may be possible that COVID-19 can be transmitted by touching an infected surface or object.
  • People are thought to be most contagious when they are most ill. Some spread might be possible before people show symptoms.
  • Currently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (DPH) are not recommending personal face masks be used by individuals who do not have prolonged exposure to individuals who have been identified as at risk.

What you can do:

You can help reduce the spread of the virus by taking a few simple actions.

Use healthy hygiene practices

If you are sick, stay home. Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Avoid touching your

eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands. Cover your cough or sneeze. Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

Plan ahead

As Angelenos living in earthquake country, we know the importance of personal preparedness on any given day. Have extra food, medical supplies, and emergency kits. Talk to your family, friends, and neighbors to develop emergency plans.

Monitor your health

If you have recently traveled in an area with coronavirus infections, OR been in contact with someone who has tested positive, OR are showing symptoms, monitor your health and contact a medical professional. If you are having difficulty breathing or keeping fluids down, go to an emergency room or call 911. Otherwise, it is better to call your doctor before going in to seek care.

Keep your distance

Practice social distancing, such as keeping six feet between yourself and others, avoid shaking hands, and avoid crowded areas. If you have a chronic disease, like lung disease, diabetes, cancer, a compromised immune system, are over 60 or pregnant, avoid unnecessary travel, unnecessary gatherings and events.

Stay informed

Stick with official sources for accurate and up-to-date information, including www.cdc.gov and publichealth.lacounty.gov. You can sign up for our City’s Mass notification system at NotifyLA.org.

What the City is doing:

Beginning today, Mayor Garcetti has instructed City Departments to implement statewide guidance and safety measures in our City policies to limit the spread of the virus.

City Hall will be closed to members of the public, except for public meetings of the City Council, and board and commission meetings will transition to accessible phone or video conference sessions that will allow constituents to make comments, ask questions, and engage with local leaders.

Additionally, the City is deploying hand-washing and sanitizing stations in City-owned public buildings and limiting gatherings and entry of visitors into public buildings to no more than 50 people at a time.

Thank you for all you are doing to keep Angelenos healthy and safe. These guidelines are designed to protect our most vulnerable neighbors. Our city is strong, and we will get through this together.

How do I clean my groceries that someone delivers to my home?  How do I clean groceries that I shopped for?

PSA Safe Grocery Shopping in COVID-19 Pandemic:
This video shows how to do it.  Now, there's conflicting information out there - the following video *may* be overkill, we still don't know, but it's definitely the safest way to go about things.  Anytime you purchase something non-perishable that you don't need to use or eat right away, you can put it in your garage or backyard for a few days and the virus will die during that time. You won't need to disinfect things that stay untouched for a while.

Learn how to be extra careful here.
Estate Planning, Basic Life and the Impact on These by Covid-19
A Free Public Service Message by Estate Planning Attorney, Maria Primushko from MVP Law Group, A PC

In light of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, me and my team at MVP Law Group are providing a free public service given the impact that it is having on our vulnerable society, particularly our senior citizens and people with special needs, not only from a legal standpoint but also on basic day-to-day needs.

If you or a loved one live in and around the San Fernando Valley or Conejo Valley and have been impacted by the coronavirus due to social distancing and public quarantine from an abundance of caution, and you need ANY assistance, please call us! We will run your errands, do your shopping, collect your medication or meals and deliver these to you – whatever you need – PLEASE call us for this free service at (818) 788-7881 during business hours or by sending a message on our Facebook Page.

The coronavirus crisis has created a real urgency and therefore you must protect yourself and your loved ones now, more than ever. As part of our public service efforts, we are also providing ESSENTIAL Estate Planning documents, free of charge for seniors as listed and explained below.

Another thing that will allow you to rest easier is to ensure that you and your loved ones have their basic estate planning is in order. That way, if needed someone can step in and make decisions to keep the family healthy and functioning.  Everyone should have these three basic documents, regardless of age, state of health and level of wealth or the lack thereof:
  • You should have a Power of Attorney for Pproperty. This would allow someone, your “agent”, to pay your bills and make other time-sensitive decisions during a period of your incapacity.
  • You should have a Healthcare Power of Attorney. This would allow your “agent” to make medical decisions for you (in consultation with your physicians) if you were unable to make those decisions for yourself.
  • You should have a HIPAA Power which authorizes those you designate to access your protected health information.
Of course, after you take these simple steps, then you can consider a more thorough approach to your estate plan, like a trust or will, beneficiary designations, etc.
In addition, I am providing free 30-minute phone or virtual online consultations regarding your personal estate plan if you have any questions.

This is the time where true human spirit puts kindness above profits and as always, regardless of a crisis we embrace all citizens as our neighbors and not just as clients.  I wish you all health and safety during this perilous time and I have faith that as a united community, we will overcome this global and mammoth crisis.

LA Food Pantry sees a 300% increase in demand for food

Apparently due to people losing their jobs because of the coronavirus, the Congregational Church of Chatsworth in Los Angeles has seen a 300% increase in demand for food at its Food Pantry. As a result, the Food Pantry is in need of canned goods and financial assistance to buy more food. “We want to do all we can to help people during these trying times,” says Rev. Bill Freeman. “We know other food pantries are running low on food too.” The church, like other houses of worship, is forgoing holding traditional worship services, and is instead offering online worship services, including sermons, on the church’s website (ChatsworthUCC.org). However, the food pantry is open Saturdays, Noon till 5 p.m., distributing food to people in need. The food pantry is also open for drop offs of food, and financial assistance to purchase more food, 7 days a week at 20440 Lassen Street, Chatsworth, CA 91311.

UPDATED: Coronavirus Consumer Issues - DO NOT GET SCAMMED

As we grapple with uncertainty and fear about coronavirus, scammers are trying to cash in. On Friday City Attorney Mike Feuer stood with District Attorney Jackie Lacey and the Consumer Protection team in our office to warn Angelenos about the numerous ways people are trying to take advantage of this crisis – with alleged cures and treatments, phishing emails after your credit card and personal info, lots of misinformation – and how we’re fighting back. At this time, the last thing people should have to worry about it is being ripped off.

Here's some suggestions to think about for your physical health.

1 - Weather permitting, do go out for a brisk walk. (Keep 6 feet away from others)
2 - Cold, rainy days...stair climbing (bottom 2 stairs are okay...if actually going up and down the stairs, be careful and hold handrail..wear your aerobic shoes if you have them).
3 - Just want to be inside...march in place (pull up those knees), jog in place (again wear those aerobic shoes).

You should do 30 minutes/day of aerobic exercise to help your heart, lungs, and immune system. Don't despair. That 30 minutes can be cumulative. In other words, do your exercises in 10 minute increments. Combine some of them with a favorite television show, i.e. 3 sessions of 10 minutes each of aerobic exercise.
BDNF-The Key Protein For Memory Loss In The Aging Brain

As we age, most of us become more and more forgetful. Aging is frequently associated with cognitive decline, even in otherwise healthy & active seniors.

As a result, many independent older adults become frustrated and worried about memory loss and fear eventually being removed from their home and taken to a senior care facility, where they will be cared for by strangers throughout the remaining years of their lives.

This may sound dramatic, however studies show that the top fear seniors have is losing their independence. This fear is most likely associated with concerns about memory loss and declining physical health.

A recent survey conducted by Home Instead Senior Care Network revealed that the #1 fear aging adults have is “loss of independence”, followed by “not being able to live at home”, and the “inability to manage their own activities of daily living”. (1)

The good news is that studies also show that getting healthy sleep, mental stimulation, eating “brain power” foods and staying active can help prevent memory loss. The big question is “Can there be an underlying reason as to why, in spite of doing all of these things, that we become increasingly forgetful with age?”

New research shows that the main reason could be, as we age, we lose a brain protein called BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor). BDNF has been clinically studied and found to be a key protein molecule for memory in the brain. (2)

BDNF is responsible for the growth, maintenance and survival of neurons, and the creation of new neural connections. Scientific research has shown that higher levels of BDNF are linked to better memory function, learning, overall cognitive performance, and long-term brain health. BDNF also prevents apoptosis (brain cell death).

After discovering that decreased BDNF levels in the aging brain could be a critical factor for the decline in memory and mood balance, medical researchers began looking for ways to increase BDNF levels naturally.

The important thing to note here is that the research wasn’t intended to cure dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, nor replace FDA approved prescription drugs such as Risperidone, Quetiapine, Seroquel and others.

Scientific research on herbs, mushrooms, plants and vitamins resulted in several clinical studies & tests that revealed that the following nutrients supported increased levels of BDNF levels in the brain.

One herb is bacopa monneiri, often referred to as bacopa. Clinically defined, “Bacopa monnieri (L.) Pennel has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine, either alone or in combination with other herbs, as a memory and learning enhancer, sedative, and anti-epileptic. It grows in wet tropical environments, and, under its common English name of water hyssop, is a popular aquarium plant. It has drawn the interest of phytotherapists and pharmacologists, and an Australian survey showed it to be one of the most popular aid for memory among 60–64-year-old consumers there”. (3)

If you’re a fan of Dr. Oz, he refers to bacopa as “the memory-boosting prescription”. That being said, one recent clinical study showed that Bacopa monnieri extract promoted hippocampus neurogenesis by elevating BDNF levels in the brain, and as an antioxidant defense against oxidative stress. (4)

In a study published in the Neurology Journal, people with higher levels of BDNF had a 40% slower rate of memory loss and cognitive function decline as they aged compared to those with the lowest BDNF levels.(5)

In another study, Stanford University researchers studied the effect BDNF levels had on the performance of airplane pilots. In the study, they chose 144 pilots to undergo tests in a flight simulator.

The researchers found that the pilots with the highest levels of BDNF scored better than those with lower levels! Their brains were sharper than the pilots with lower BDNF levels, and their reactions were also quicker. (6)

Next is a popular mushroom called Lion’s Mane Mushroom. The world’s only nootropic mushroom, also known as H. Erinaceus or yamabushitake, is a large, white, shaggy mushroom that resembles a lion’s mane as it grows. It has both culinary and medical uses in China, India, Japan and Korea.

Lion’s mane mushrooms are enjoyed raw, cooked, dried or steeped as a tea. Their extracts are used in over-the-counter health supplements and the flavor has been described as “seafood-like,” often comparing it to crab or lobster.

Studies show that lion’s mane mushroom can support your brain health by stimulating the creation of two important compounds: nerve growth factor (NGF) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). (7)

A double-blinded clinical study has shown that taking Lion’s Mane was effective in improving mild cognitive impairment in 50- to 80-year-old Japanese patients. (8)

30 adults were randomized into two 15-person groups. One group took Lion’s Mane and the other group took a placebo. At the end of the study, the subjects were observed for the next 4 weeks. The Lion’s Mane group had significantly increased their scores on the cognitive function scale!. (9)

Further research revealed that a tree bark called French Maritime Pine Bark, also known as Pycnogenol, increases BDNF levels.(10) And. No! You don’t have to chew the bark to get its brain-boosting effect. The liquid is extracted from the inner bark and is also used to help prevent diabetes and acts as an anti-aging agent in skin creams.

Additional research has shown that there are another 5-star, all-natural brain nutrients, that can help increase levels of BDNF. They are vitamin B-6, L-Theanine, Citicoline, ALCAR & NALT. If you were to take all 8 nutrients daily, just imagine the boost in BDNF levels you would be giving your brain.

I tried buying all 8 nutrients separately and it was costly (about $180/month) and time consuming, plus I had to keep track of each capsule! I basically had my own all-natural pharmacy cluttering my kitchen countertop or taking up cabinet space.
So, I began my own research to see if there was a supplement that possibly combined the exact 8 nutrients I researched, and discovered there are two supplements. They are Brain Power Genesis (www.BrainPowerGenesis.com) and MindLab Pro (Amazon). Out of the two, Brain Power Genesis is the best. It has the exact 8 ingredients and costs a little less than MindLab Pro, and it is made in the USA. The ingredients are tested & certified for purity, effectiveness and safety. MindLab Pro, unfortunately, contains an additional ingredient called Rhodelia Rosea, which made me dizzy and gave me a headache.

Taking supplements is a quick, simple and effective way to boost your BDNF levels, however exercise and healthy sleep is also recommended and shown to help increase BDNF levels. If you’re serious about maximizing your brain fitness, Brain Power Genesis also offers a complete Brain Fitness Program that includes guides, videos and a 60-day supply of supplements for $197.

One very important thing to consider before buying any supplement is to make sure it is manufactured in an FDA registered lab and that the ingredients are tested and certified for purity. This usually means that the supplement is more expensive. Cheap supplements are limited on ingredient formulation and dosage and the manufacturers often import in bulk from China.

Museum Asks People To Recreate Paintings With Stuff They Can Find at Home, Here Are The Results

Even though most of us are stuck at home during Coronavirus quarantine and can’t go out and enjoy art in museums, that doesn’t mean that life has to be boring or uncultured. The Getty Museum in Los Angeles challenged art fans to post photos of themselves recreating their favorite works of art from the safety of their homes. People responded with a lot of enthusiasm and flooded social media with their unique artistic interpretations.

In Unity There is Strength v1

When things seem dark and bleak,
That’s the time that we should seek
To reach out and help each other ---
Whether friend or foe, stranger or brother.

Life continues on for the lucky and the strong,
Let’s do our very best, and try to get along.
The strength of unity will do the deed ---
Powerful together, we will heed the need.

In Unity There is Strength v2

It’s been said throughout the ages
With wit and wisdom from the sages:
“Have no fear --- be of good cheer.”
Words from an ivory tower can empower.

Though there be tears and anxious fears,
With faith and hope we all must cope;
Through the darkness of the pain and sorrow,
We must believe the promise of a brighter tomorrow.

When things seem dark and bleak,
It is the time to reach out and seek
If we can and help each other ---
Be they friend or foe, stranger or brother
Speak words of praise to those who raise our trust in one another.

Life continues on for the mindful and the strong;
Put to the test to do our very best, we’ll get along.
Our strength in unity will do the deed ---

LA church to hold a virtual Blessing of the Animals service

The Congregational Church of Chatsworth in Los Angeles will conduct a “virtual” Blessing of the Animals service on Sunday, April 19, just before Earth Day. The animal blessings will take place during the church’s Zoom worship service at 10 a.m. “Due to the coronavirus we can’t bless the animals in our sanctuary as we’ve done in the past,” says Rev. Bill Freeman. “But people can hold their animals up to their computer camera and I’ll bless them.” To join the service online, people simply have to send an email to Pastor Freeman, at Bill@BillFreeman.org and he will send them an invite.

The Congregational Church of Chatsworth, a United Church of Christ church, is located at 20440 Lassen Street in Chatsworth.

Alisha here again with a personal recommendation.

I use a free app that has been a wonderful way to connect with far away friends.  During physical social distancing, even people in your neighborhood can feel far away, and this app can really help you connect. >>> https://www.marcopolo.me/ <<<  Feel face to face without the germs!

I use Marco Polo to stay in touch with a group of friends who grew up together but don’t live in my area.  We’ve been able to see each other and talk every day now for the past year, and we are all so much happier and healthier for it.  I tell people about Marco Polo all the time because I just love using it.

https://www.marcopolo.me/ <<<< Download the free app to your mobile device, and get chatting with your friends and family!

BE SAFE ONLINE:
  • Only talk to people you know
  • Don’t give out any sensitive information online
  • Please don’t spam your contact list with invites. Reach out to friends and family whom you’d like to spend time with and ask them if they’d like to do this with you.
  • If your grandchildren are minors, please make sure their parents are aware of their child’s Marco Polo use, as teens frequently use technology like this less responsibly when not under the eyes of adults. 😉

Ok, this one isn't a group - it's a page you can "Like" on Facebook. Memes are sort of repeated internet jokes, visual in nature.  You may not "get" all of them, but the more time you spend looking at memes, the more you understand them.  These are 100% wholesome, quality content.  Nothing sad or mean allowed here. Lots of cute pictures.  An internet safe space for sure.

Estate Planning & Elder Law

Where There’s A Will, There’s Probate!

Ongoing

Many clients I meet think that passing on their worldly goods is a simple proposition: They write out their final wishes, then, when they die, someone ensures that their wishes are carried out. Well, unfortunately, Wills do require Probate. And there is nothing simple about Probate. It is a highly technical, complicated, public and bureaucratic process that can drown your heirs in a sea of red tape. You may be eligible for a short-form Probate only if you have a small estate, which in California must be valued at less than $150,000.

In Los Angeles County it takes almost two years to complete the probate process and to transfer assets to the beneficiaries. It is expensive since 25-35% of the total estate is spent on various fees and involves numerous professionals including attorneys, appraisers, accountants, executors, etc. It is also very public so all your nosey neighbors and estranged relatives can find out the value of your estate, your family drama and anyone can jump in and claim their rights to inheritance.

In case you’re thinking that you can spare your heirs from the hassles of Probate by dying intestate and without a will, forget it!Your estate will still be probated whether you have a will or not and if anything, becomes more complicated.

Thankfully there are strategies for circumventing the Probate process. For example, the Revocable Living Trust is widely considered the most effective and versatile estate planning tool as it avoids the probate process.

In contrast, with a Living Trust, you safeguard your privacy, expedite the disposition of your estate, and reduce costs, etc. In addition, a Living Trust enables you to take care of your healthcare and financial needs, should you become disabled. It also allows you to maximize estate tax planning, get maximum control over the disposition of your assets, and provides fair treatment to all your heirs, which is especially relevant today given the growing number of blended families.

However, not all Living Trusts are created equal. It is important that a thorough analysis of your family’s dynamic happens before the right plan can be designed for your unique family’s situation.
