The Seven Summits Centre for Learning opened in Rossland, BC in September 2013.

Action Required

Switching from Blended to Fully Online
We are now finishing our third week of being fully online. The teachers are checking in with students weekly and are available for individual online meetings. Craig, the community math and physics mentor, is also available for individual online meetings. Parents are receiving updates from teachers and staff.

We will continue to impart new information concerning education as we receive it. As you can appreciate, the situation is rather fluid and we are doing our best to ensure your student is able and empowered to continue their studies in these unprecedented times.

The staff at Seven Summits have many years of combined experience working with teenagers and any one of us is available for a chat should you have some questions or just want to share an experience. We are all committed to the well-being of your child and are always open to hearing about how they are doing.

If we are not able to provide the help you need, we WILL find someone that can. We are all in this together. If you have questions or concerns or do not know how to contact any of the staff please click here.

If your student is in need of anything they have left at the Centre, please click here to make arrangements to have it delivered.

Purchasing of Ferraro Food Cards is Continuing
Our Ferraro Food Gift Card program is still going. We have lots of cards on hand and can pop them in the mail to you at any time. We have had a marked drop in people participating and we would like to see that increase. The cards are great at this time as they work like cash — you just need to slide them through the machine at the checkout — no need to touch the keypad and you can just tell the cashier the number on the back for her to input! Virtually touch free for everyone!!

The cards come in $50, $100 and $250 denominations and you can order any amount you wish. At this point we are still getting 10% of each sale from Ferraros so if you get $1000 worth of cards, the Centre receives $100 from the sale, but it costs you nothing extra! Ferraros is dropping the percentage to 5% in July, so the more you can stockpile now, the more we earn for programming at the Centre. This is our biggest fundraiser so please consider participating!

You can send us the money via e-transfer, cheque or credit card (we only get 6.5-7.5% on credit card orders, however). Click here to make arrangements to do the transaction.

Parent Information Sessions
Parent Information Workshops that are coming up:
April 27th - Mental Health and the Distributed Learning (Online) Student - 2pm with Leanne Webster Brenner.

Anna King attended the Supporting the D.L. Math Learner workshop in early March and found the secondary grades portion very useful. Thai Nguyen (secondary school math teacher) and Nicole Hamilton (resource specialist) made the slides of their presentation available. Please click here to see it. If any student is wishing additional support or resources at this time, they will find clickable links within the slides. These are all free on-line resources approved by Thai Nguyen. Info will also be posted on PAC website and FaceBook page.

Volunteer Opportunities

Painting the Outside Stairs
Once the Stay at Home rules are relaxed and the weather is a little warmer, we are looking for 1-4 people to scrape and paint the outside stairs at the Centre. They are showing wear and tear and, even though they are owned by the City, maintenance falls under the building’s occupants to maintain. A good scrape and fresh coats of paint will make for a more inviting and welcoming entrance to our Centre. If time and energy remains it would be wonderful to paint the exterior of the entryway and the two plywood covers on the west facing windows. These projects can be done in time frames that suit the volunteers. Please click here to volunteer or for more information.

News at the Centre

Present and Past Students rock the world stage

Jasmine Drolet (Grade 12 student), Remi Drolet (graduate) and Molly Miller (past student) managed to slip in under the wire (before mass closures from COVID 19) and attend the World Junior Nordic Ski Championships in Oberwiesenthal, Germany from 29 February to 8 March 2020. All three had to win berths to be part of the Canadian team at Trials held in Canada. What an experience and what great results from our trio. Molly and Jasmine were competing at a World Juniors for the second time and improved on their placings from last year as they gained maturity and experience. Remi placed 2nd in the relay event where he skied the anchor position. This is a great accomplishment and only the third time Canada has been on the podium at World Junior Championships in its 43-year history! Remi also came 4th in the 30km Skate race. This was Remi’s last year to compete at World Juniors and he has certainly left his mark. Huge congratulations to all three of them.

FIESTA 2020 a Maraca Shaking Good Time

Even though it may feel like a lifetime ago, we held our annual dance fundraiser on February 28th. It was renamed FIESTA 2020 to go with our Mexican-inspired theme. With about 130 people in attendance it was a great time! Shredded Cheese played upbeat danceable music that got everyone on the dance floor. The margaritas made by our intrepid bar tenders, Sue McBride and Dan Kroeker were a big hit, and who knew there were so many sombreros in town! Mexican appetizers were prepared and served by Cahoots Kitchen and were lip-smacking good. We fundraised a record breaking $6500! Thanks so much to all the people, businesses and organizations that contributed items or services to our silent auction. Feeling Anxious? - How to Talk About it with Kids
Ann came across a great article called Feeling Anxious? Talking About It Skillfully With Your Kids and Teens by Delaney Ruston, MD (maker of Screenagers and author of Tech Talk Tuesdays). Joyce has read the article and also recommends it as a good read. You can read its entirety at the web link here.

Following are some ‘Conversation Starters’ that are suggested in the article:

  1. Have you felt any new feelings of anxiety this week?

  2. Do you notice that anyone else in the family is feeling anxious?

  3. How does that make you feel?

  4. Is there anything that you do to help make you bring down feelings of anxiety? Are there any ways that you have helped others this week bring down their levels of anxiety?

As you speak to your teenager, keep in mind that they might also be interested in your feelings. Taking care not to burden them with all the details, feel free to name your feelings and how you are dealing with them. Let them know you are not an expert (or maybe you are :-) at dealing with your feelings but perhaps you can share what some of your life experience has taught you about coping with them.

Thank you for your support!
