Saffron for emotional health

According to the latest 2018 WHO data on mental health disorders, depression as an emotional disorder is estimated to affect more than 300 million people worldwide.

Our emotional health depends not only on the functional state of the organism, but on many external factors that influence it, from daily exposure to ambient light to social relationships, in which social isolation has a very important weight in our state of cheer up.

It is not easy to find natural remedies that are similar in efficacy to pharmacological treatments and that also lack the side effects associated with them. St. John's wort is an example of a medicinal plant that has been shown to have similar efficacy to synthetic drugs, but is not without side effects and drug interactions.

Research on saffron shows that this spice has important benefits for our mood.

Saffron (Crocus sativus L.) is a spice that accompanies many culinary dishes in the Mediterranean diet, giving flavor and color. However, this spice has a value that transcends its culinary and economic use (it is the most expensive spice in the world), due to the use it has been given in traditional medicine.

In cultures like Persian, saffron has been traditionally used as a pain reliever, antidepressant, and anti-inflammatory. Its presence in food also helps to relax the muscles of the digestive tract to reduce spasms and help digest food, as well as being an appetite enhancer.

A meta-analysis was published in 2019 that included the qualitative analysis of 11 randomized clinical studies conducted with the use of saffron in the treatment of mild and moderate depression. The study concludes that saffron has a significant effect on depression symptoms and that the results showed that saffron's efficacy was superior to that of placebo and at the same level as antidepressant treatments.

Saffron Studies for Emotional Support

Several studies indicate that the stigmas of the saffron flower have mental benefits. The studies have shown that the active ingredients responsible for this property are safranal and crocins. These substances have an antidepressant action by maintaining balanced the levels of dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin.

In addition, saffron has high amounts of antioxidant such as carotenoids and B vitamins that have an antioxidant action against free radicals in the body, which could protect brain cells against oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is known to be a problem in people with mood problems.

Clinical studies carried out in patients suffering from anxiety and depression have shown that a dose of 30 mg of saffron extract distributed in the morning and afternoon is effective to improve mood with a similar efficacy to drugs such as fluoxetine (Prozac) or imipramine.

In one of the clinical studies carried out, the effect of a saffron extract was evaluated together with the antidepressant medication taken by one group of patients versus another group that only took the antidepressant drug. The results not only demonstrated that taking saffron and medication together was compatible, but that patients taking that combination showed significantly better scores for relief of depression, anxiety and overall general health compared to the group who only took the drug.

A meta-analysis published in 2019 included 11 randomized clinical studies using saffron for the treatment of mild and moderate depression. The meta-analysis concluded that saffron had a significant effect on depression symptoms and that the results showed that the efficacy of saffron was superior to the placebo and at the same level as antidepressant treatments.

SafraSOL™ : safranal and crocinas in the right dose

SafraSOL™ is a saffron extract standardized to 10% in crocins and 2% in safranal. This extract has been produced maintaining the two main active principles responsible for the activity of saffron at the nervous system level.

According to clinical studies carried out with saffron extracts in the treatment of nervous system disorders, a dosage of 30 mg of SafraSOL™ per day divided into two doses of 15 mg is recommended.

30 mg SafraSOL™ provides 3 mg of crocins (approximately 2.4 mg of crocin) and 0.6 mg of safranal.
