Community and Place News is produced by WALGA's Community Team, part of the broader WALGA Strategy, Policy and Planning Team.
Community and Place News is usually a monthly publication, however the frequency has been temporarily increased to fortnightly to ensure that relevant news and developments can be shared with subscribers in a more timely fashion.
WALGA acknowledges the many traditional owners of the land on which we work throughout Western Australia. We pay our respects to their Elders, past, present and emerging.

| WALGA's Community Team continues to work hard to assist Local Governments with a range of issues in the community field. |

The COVID-19 pandemic has created rapid change in the way that Local Government provides community development support and services to the community.
We would appreciate feedback on how best we can support you during this challenging time and have prepared a short survey which can be completed here.

| Tuesdays at Twelve - Hosted by the Department of Communities Director General, Michelle Andrews |
|
| Tuesdays at Twelve is an insightful six-part webinar series that will examine in detail topical issues as they arise, including how we can all assist the community during an unprecedented time of physical distancing. |
|
In the first webinar on Tuesday, 14 April, Director General Michelle Andrews and special guests WACOSS President, Deborah Zanella and Mental Health Commissioner, Jennifer McGrath discussed the State Emergency Welfare Planning, community engagement and citizen well-being.
In the second webinar on Tuesday, 21 April, the Department of Communities provided an update on the Taskforces that have been established to support vulnerable cohorts. |

| Local Government Showcase Webinars - Hosted by WALGA's Emergency Management Team |
|
| WALGA’s Emergency Management Team are hosting webinars to showcase Local Government initiatives during the COVID-19 crisis. |
|
| The webinar held on Wednesday, 22 April included presentations from the Shires of Bruce Rock and Denmark, and the City of Joondalup on how they have been working with their communities through the pandemic. |
|
| Local Governments that would like to share their local COVID-19 story are encouraged to contact the Emergency Management Team. |
|

| Update WA Youth Services Directory - Youth Affairs Council WA |
|
| As a function of the State Emergency Welfare Plan, a Youth Taskforce led by the Youth Affairs Council WA has been established (amongst other taskforces) to respond to critical issues arising for youth services and to plan for medium to long term solutions impacting young people more broadly. |
|
| To improve information sharing for services and young people during the Pandemic, the Taskforce is undertaking a large-scale update of the WA Youth Services Directory which includes Local Government.
|

| Danjoo Koorliny Festival Reconnect and Fire Symposium |
|
| Dr Noel Nannup OAM, Dr Richard Walley OAM, Professor Emeritus Colleen Hayward AM and Carol Innes have organised two very special online events to continue the work of the Danjoo Koorliny Walking Together towards 2029 Festival. |
|
Festival Reconnect Session
Date: Thursday, 23 April
Time: 4:00pm to 5:30pm
Synopsis: This online session will be an opportunity for everyone who came to last year’s festival events to come together again in the spirit of Danjoo Koorliny Walking Together. This Reconnect Session will be a space to hear from our cultural-spiritual Elders and leaders and a chance to connect to the whole Danjoo Koorliny Walking Together project, including everything that's been happening outside the festival time.
Knowing Fire, Caring for Country Symposium
Date: Thursday, 30 April
Time: 6:00pm to 7:30pm
Synopsis: Coronavirus quickly shifted the national and global spotlight away from the devastating bushfires that ravaged much of Australia earlier this year. However the issue of how to work with fire in Australia - and of how to care for country more broadly - has not gone away. In this Aboriginal-led symposium we will hear how Noongar people - use fire and care for country for the benefit of land, plants, animals, human beings, and sites of cultural significance. |

| Timeframe Amended for New Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Bill Due to COVID-19 |
|
| The State Government was in the process of drafting the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Bill 2020 to repeal and replace the Aboriginal Heritage Act 1972, however consultation for the new Bill has now been put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic. |
|
The State Government remains committed to introducing new Aboriginal heritage legislation however an amended time frame is essential to enable the State Government, Aboriginal community and key stakeholders to focus on the current health and well-being of the community.
The timeline for consultation and introduction of the Bill will be reviewed once COVID-19 has subsided and current travel restrictions have been lifted. |

| Documenting the COVID-19 Crisis as it Unfolds at the City of Melville |
|
| As the COVID-19 situation has been evolving in Australia, the City of Melville Museums and Local History Team is starting to document the crisis as it unfolds. |
|
This is an important part of local history, as it is a phenomenon that no one has been through before, and the crisis will be referenced for decades to come. The team are collecting images and paraphernalia that relate directly to the City of Melville’s response to the virus, in addition to the effect it is having on the community.
Community members who wish to participate or who see anything that they think should be documented, can send documents or images to the Museums and Local History Team. |

| City of Melville Happiness Stimulus Package |
|
| The City of Melville is offering a Happiness Stimulus Package and is engaging with residents to obtain feedback about things that the City could fund to bring happiness to local neighbourhoods. |
|
An Idea Wall is available on the City's website and people can get involved by:
- sharing an idea to bring happiness by selecting a category their idea fits in and telling the City about it
- clicking 'Like' if they see an idea they support, and
- discussing the ideas on the wall in a positive and constructive manner.
Users are requested to undertake to be kind, helpful, friendly and positive to the people in the community, and the Idea Wall is being moderated with inappropriate posts removed. |

| Local Governments Work Together to Develop LibraryCraft |
|
| The City of Fremantle, City of Canning, City of Busselton, City of Bunbury, Town of Victoria Park, City of South Perth and City of Greater Geraldton have worked together to create LibraryCraft. |
|
| LibraryCraft is a Minecraft server with multiple worlds for WA players aged between 7 and 17 years old. This creative world will keep young people busy and their minds active, with exciting challenges and monthly competitions to win. |

| City of Stirling Launches New Library App |
|
| The City of Stirling has introduced a new Mobile Library app, available on Google Play and the App Store. |
|
| The app enables users to manage their account, search the catalogue and renew and reserve books. |

| Local Government Professionals WA - Community Development Network Facebook Group |
|
| The Local Government Professionals WA - Community Development Network has a Facebook group for those working in community development. |
|
The Community Development Network's aim is to provide leadership and support to those working in Community Development and Community Services in Western Australian Local Governments.
This group is a place for Western Australian Local Government community workers to connect and share ideas, showcase projects and to give and receive support. As a general guideline this group is intended for those with an email address ending in wa.gov.au. |

| 'Mappa' Online Health Services Tool Launching in June |
|
| The Aboriginal Health Council of WA (AHCWA) will launch the online tool for health services in regional and remote areas known as 'Mappa' in June 2020. |
|
The Mappa platform has been developed through an inclusive consultation process with the WA health sector and the wider Aboriginal community. Once completed, Mappa will be a free, online database which uses spatial mapping to enable web visualisation of critical information and services available in regional and remote areas.
Mappa is designed for use by anyone – Aboriginal people, health professionals, all patients and the general public. It provides timely, comprehensive and reliable information related to geographical access, transport routes and weather conditions. |

| Injury Matters - Local Government Guide to Promoting Safety and Preventing Injury |
|
| Injury prevention and recovery is a public health priority contributing to 9% of the total burden of disease in Australia. |
|
Injury Matters has developed a guide to assist Local Governments with including injury prevention in Public Health Plans.
The guide:
- outlines how injury prevention and safety promotion can be considered in Public Health Plans
- outlines how to determine local injury priorities
- suggests objectives and activities that can be included to address specific injury topics
- provides injury specific resources and grants, and
- outlines agencies that can support the implementation of injury activities with Local Government.

| Be Connected - Free Online Tutorials in Digital Technology |
|
| Be Connected is an Australia-wide initiative empowering all Australians to thrive in a digital world, specifically designed to assist older people. |
|
| Be Connected has online learning resources as well as a network of community partners - the Be Connected Network - who offer in-person support so people can develop their digital skills and confidence. Users can find a local place for friendly help and advice, or join the network to help others. |
|

| Street Teams Bull Creek |
|
| A Street Team is a small group of about 20 households in a neighbourhood street or block working together to weather the storm of COVID-19, and to help each other through the next few months. |
|
| A Street Team will work together to support each other and do things such as:
- keep people connected with the outside world through door knock and telephone tree check-ins
- help others with shopping, dog walking or picking things up from the chemist
- make meals to share or put together care packages
- help people access medical and other care services they may need, and
- organise fun things in your street and neighbourhood e.g. socially distanced front yard chats, driveway exercise.

| Creative@Home |
|
| Creative@Home is a new program developed by the North Midlands Project to encourage people to Act-Belong-Commit creatively while they’re in home isolation. |
|
| The website has a collection of home-based creative activities, workshops, community projects and useful information. |
