Childcare Resources

The St. Lawrence-Lewis BOCES is coordinating with all 18 component school districts including Heuvelton Central School to provide access to families of first responders and healthcare workers. Essential healthcare workers may include physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, registered nurses, LPNs, nurse assistants, or lab personnel. First responders may include paramedics, EMTs, police officers, and firefighters.

If you are a healthcare worker or first responder in need of child care services, please email childcare@sllboces.org, or call the main office at 315-562-8130 and leave a message.

For a listing of available child care resources in St. Lawrence County, visit https://www.sllboces.org/apps/pages/COVID19

Surveys:

If you are a parent or caregiver who needs child care, please complete this parent need for child care survey. Based on the information you provide about your job, employer, number of children, and financial need, OCFS may be able to help you find the child program you need. It may be a challenge to find child care due to COVID-19 related program closures, however the staff at OCFS are trying their best to support families to find the high-quality child care that they need.

OCFS is collecting information from licensed and registered child care providers to find out whether they have openings in their child care program, and if they have the capacity and desire to serve more children than their established capacity. Providers who have slots available in their program are asked to complete this survey every Wednesday. OCFS will share this information with stakeholders including the local child care resource and referral agencies to help connect parents in need of child care with available slots in their community.

Purple Pride

David Steele, our Health & PE teacher has started a podcast to help keep spirits up during these trying times!

'Purple Pride is a podcast to reach out to our school community of Heuvelton in a time of social distancing in order to gain information, learn about people and their lives, and to recall the fond memories of the school days prior to online learning.'

Elementary Updates

Traveling Visits

Nancy Mashaw and Kristy Simmons drove 3.5 hours in the pouring rain to visit each of our child's homes. "We miss them so much and to see the smiles on their faces was priceless!  We practiced social distancing by driving our own cars and standing at a distance while talking to each child.  We asked questions and had beautiful conversations! It was truly an amazing experience!"

Kindergarten Work

Mrs. Simmons and Mrs. Mashaws Kindergarten students were given a new task each day to research frogs and write a research paper. The final outcome was beautiful and they were all so proud of their work!

Genius Week

This week students in Miss. Porter's class did an optional genius week. The kids got to choose any topic they wanted to explore, and by the end of the week make some sort of presentation of their information.

Rowen McAllister is researching the Heuvelton fish ladder. Here he has prepared a list of questions to ask one of the men who helped build the fish ladder.  Their phone conference was a success!

Ms. Coller's Quarantine Journals

Week of 4/13/2020

Lindsey Barnett

“Surviving Quarantine”

In this picture you see my mom and I; we were at Walmart. As you can see we are both wearing masks. I made these masks for my mom and her co-workers. They were exposed to a man who goes to NYC every weekend to see his family. Their job refused to hand out masks because “they needed to save them for desperate times.” I made 10 masks that have disposable or washable filters in them, nose pieces, and elastic that is gentle on the ears. This is significant in my life because I am helping my mom and her co-workers stay safe from COVID-19.

Nate Mashaw

“Rocky”

I have been using quarantine to my advantage and working out every day. I am working out all parts of my body to try to gain an edge on people using this time as a break. It is significant right now because I am making myself better now and will come back better after quarantine. This makes me happy, fulfilled, proud, and gets me outside.

“Me and my mom”

This is a picture of my mom and I. She dressed as a hippie and I dressed as a cowboy. We had a dance party with fun snacks and juice boxes. It is significant in my life because of how close my mom and I have gotten since quarantine started.

Caidence Durant

Explanation: I chose a picture of my little brother Aiden. We’ve been stuck inside lately and both of our parents still go to work so it's basically just been him and I home alone all day long. He likes to play outside and go for bike rides so that’s what helps me get out of my house. I also get paid for watching him every day so that's a plus.

“A Girl’s Bestfriend”

This is a picture of my dog and I. My dog’s name is Cheewhee. Cheewhee is significant in my life right now because he is my best furry friend and even with all of the crazy stuff happening around us, he’s still happy and there for me. Lately, he has been super excited (even though he looks grumpy in this picture) because he gets to see and spend a lot more time with the family.

Week of 4/13/2020

Nicholas Youngs

Explanation: It's a picture of me and my dog. It's significant in my life because even in this crazy time I have my dog who is always there and has no clue what's going on but just knows that I’m home all the time and she loves it.

Yearbook Updates

The yearbook has been submitted on time (due date was April 4th) The usual arrival time is somewhere around memorial day. The print company that we use is currently not operating. There is no way to know how this will affect the arrival time of our book.  There are always extra books and they can be purchased with cash or check, no way of knowing when that exchange can be done. Books cost 42 dollars, and the personalization deadline has passed (Feb 28th). There is no way to change that as the covers are done and waiting for pages to be inserted.

If you ordered a book you will still receive it, the exact time is yet to be determined. If you still want to order a book you absolutely can. School closure has only affected the spring sports section of the book (no 2020 spring team photos but the usual 2019 game photos). The book is still awesome and something the seniors and Mrs. Putney are very proud of.
