A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM TANYA
COVID-19 precautions take away the support of family, friends and teachers in sharing the joy and work of parenting. These changes can wear on resilience and impact on the mental health of all family members.

When both parents are at home it can be helpful to divide the day and have it explicitly set out whose shift it is to be working and who is with the kids. It can be incredibly difficult to divide attention between work and kids. When I try and do both at the same time, I find that I get very little work done and don’t respond well to my kids’ needs, requests or demands.

If one parent is a stay at home parent, the other needs to step in and fill in the respite that school, organized activities, lessons, and playdates usually provide to get stuff done and have time for self-care.

While this advice may seem obvious, what is obvious to one person doesn’t mean it is obvious or implemented by the family as a group. It is worth talking about and setting out the ‘house rules’.

I am attaching a couple of my favourite finds on YouTube that I feel engage my kids actively and positively. Certainly children’s age and temperament can influence how independently they will participate, so these may be ideas for your kids to do on their own or for you to do with them. Either way it can provide a healthy break.
