Hello out there to all who follow the SF Bay NERR,
We have long appreciated your interest and support and would like to take this opportunity to fill you in on what is happening to our Reserve during these challenging times. CoVID19 has been like a snowball that has grown into an avalanche. On March 16, 2020 our staff became impacted by “Shelter in Place”, the SF State campus (including the EOS Center, our headquarters) shut down, and suddenly all of us – and all of our friends, neighbors, relatives, co-workers, students, and partners became grounded. The sheer pace of this turnabout is mind boggling and it has posed multiple ethical, practical, and of course, economic challenges.
So, while we settle into this new reality for what appears to be the long term (uncertain, of course), I am writing to provide our NERR community some news of what life is like today for the SF Bay NERR. Our field work has been put on hold, many of the instruments are collecting data. Additionally, our in-person training and education events at the EOS Center and at our partner components are being postponed or replaced with virtual learning.
Thanks to NOAA and SFSU, our staff is still employed, and we are all very busy catching up on a backlog of work that we just didn’t have time to do. We are learning the value of Zoom and many other virtual communication mechanisms that bring small and large groups together and we connect virtually frequently. We are working hard with our EOS Center Outreach Team and partners to devise ways to share all the great things we do and learn about with the broader public. . We are strengthening our own capacity so that, when the season turns and the avalanche subsides, we will be able to do a better job providing our SF Bay NERR program to our partners and the citizens of our region.
We’re still open for business in our various homes from Pacifica to Santa Rosa. Hope to hear from all of you. Please feel free to share your new ideas and any and all questions. We’ll do our best to respond … virtually, of course!
Stay well.
