Preservation Work Continues
at Cape Henry Lighthouse

Last year, the completed dune restoration project at Cape Henry Lighthouse saw the foundation of the tower protected and a new visitor platform installed.

This year, the work continued with interior painting of the tower. After receiving the results of paint analysis by experts at Colonial Williamsburg, the new coat of paint on the interior stairs is based on a similar color used by the Coast Guard in the 1860s.

Our preservation specialist and project manager Eric Litchford shows you the finished paint job in his new video! Like a lighthouse keeper from generations ago, Eric continues to check on our historic sites while practicing social distancing.

The Man Behind the Signature

Who was the person behind 230 year-old graffiti in the bricks at Cape Henry Lighthouse? Our new blog post delves into the man behind the mystery, Col. Thomas Newton, Jr., who could be considered "The Father of Old Cape Henry Lighthouse."

Cutting the Ribbon on the Dune Restoration Project
May, 2019

Last year, the dune restoration project resulted in a new visitor platform and new exhibit signage at Cape Henry Lighthouse. Check out our video documenting the ribbon cutting ceremony as we approach the 1 year anniversary of the completed dune project.

We miss our visitors and look forward to showing you all the lighthouse has to offer. We hope to see you at Cape Henry Lighthouse when it's safe to reopen!

Preservation Virginia relies heavily on admissions sales at Cape Henry Lighthouse for our annual operating budget. With the lighthouse and our other historic sites temporarily closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we're doing everything we can to identify new ways of funding our work. But we need your help now more than ever.

As we explore grants and loans to keep things moving forward, your annual fund contributions are critical. Last year, we received $80,000 in annual fund gifts between April 1st and June 30th. Will you help us reach our goal?

Donate securely online, or contact Marny Hackley, annual fund manager, at mhackley@preservationvirginia.org to make a contribution.

Your gifts "keep the light shining" at Cape Henry Lighthouse, and keep our statewide preservation program shining as well.
