Dear Jones Family,

I hope this message finds you well and that you have been able to make the most of these challenging times.

On Monday, April 13, we will launch our Jones Remote Learning Plan (see attached), which I shared with you last week.  This plan is designed to continue student learning during our present school closure, at least through the end of April. While not perfect, remote learning enables all of us to remain actively engaged in student learning to the greatest degree possible.  Please note the following:

ENGAGE!: The key to learning is active student engagement. Please make every effort to support your students in connecting with their teachers through scheduled Class Meetings, Virtual Ac Labs, and Office Hours. Urge them to check their CPS email and Google Classroom regularly, at least daily, and respond to communications from their teachers. Class Times will be conducted primarily through Google Meet.  (NOTE: CPS has not authorized the use of ZOOM as a meeting and communication platform.) Students should think of these remote learning activities as they would a regular school day. Teachers will be tracking student engagement. Working together, we can all make remote learning a success!

CLASS TIME AND VIRTUAL AC LAB: Our remote learning schedule includes Virtual Ac Lab times concurrent with Class Times for other subject areas. Please note that direct instruction does not necessarily take up the full two hour Class Time block; students may drop in on Virtual Ac Lab when not directly engaged in instruction. Also, remember teachers are available during Office Hours and other times, as well.

DOUBLED UP" STUDENTS:  We have a few students who have two classes in the same content area, thus presenting a potential conflict during instructional times. Students should contact their two teachers to work out the necessary accommodations.

TECHNOLOGY: We have checked-out almost 100 Chromebooks for student use during remote learning. If you are in need of a device, there will be an administrator in the building every weekday 8:00 am to 2:00 pm. Please email me and Assistant Principal Mitchell to arrange a time to pick up a Chromebook. Do not check one out if you do not need it!

APRIL 17 - SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT DAY:  Friday, April 17, is a professional development day for teachers on the CPS calendar.  There will be no remote instruction that day.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at any time.

Sincerely,

P. Joseph Powers, Ph.D.
