Presidents Message

On behalf of the Board of Directors, we hope that you are safe, sound and healthy.

With the last couple weeks of the season and the Tournament of Champions cancelled, the Board of Directors also practiced social distancing. Our Manager, Melanie Hughes, worked at the club for a few weeks to let people in and out of the building so items could be retrieved and some end-year work completed. She continues to work full time from home but will be coming to the club occasionally this month as well. Our Ice Tech along with help from volunteers was able to shut down the plant, remove the ice and put everything away until next year.

We had a Board of Directors meeting this last week via the internet on Zoom. We have started to plan for the future of the club; and get ready for next season. There are some things to note:

  1. We have a committee in place to replace our outgoing Ice Technician – they are already in the interview process now.
  2. We decided to postpone the General Meeting later this month due to Covid-19. We have a committee in place to determine when and how that meeting may be conducted. The reason for the General meeting is to vote in new board members (the Annual Meeting in October addresses finances). We do want to have the General Meeting as soon as possible so that those members can plan for next season. The current Board of Directors have all volunteered to remain in place until we can have elections – we will let you know how the process pans out in the coming weeks.
  3. Normally we open registration at the end of March so that we can reserve spots for the upcoming season in specific leagues. With Covid-19, we have suspended registration but hope to open in up again in the near future once we know more from our governments and curling governing bodies on the future of our sport. We are hoping and planning to start the season on time; but we are also planning in the event the season is disrupted. Again – it is a bit early to make firm decisions on the coming season.
  4. The Board of Directors have approved an interim budget for the coming season and will begin work on infrastructure during the summer. We have plans based on no disruption to the season; and plans in the event there are disruptions (not completing all works).

We have six board member positions to fill:  four for 3 years; one for 2 years; and one for 1 year. If you are interested in joining the team, please let contact Melanie at manager@barriecurlingclub.com.

We are hoping for the best; but also planning for the worst. No matter what we do, we will make sure our curling club will be a safe place to play and socialize; and then we can get back to having fun with our game and time with our friends.

Happy Easter to you and your family.

Chris Hauschild (Haus)
President

Two years ago, our longtime Draw Masters Bob and Gail Smith advised the Barrie Curling Club they would be slowly stepping back as they were posturing themselves for a more relaxed life from what they had been enjoying at that time.  They were in the process of moving to Orillia which would obviously make driving to and from Barrie more difficult on winter roads, the times required to perform the Draw Master duties.  This winter Bob has been available in an advisory capacity only as a few of our club members have stepped up to help with the bonspiel draws, working under Bob's guidance.

This past week the Barrie Curling Club was honored to present to Bob and Gail a framed, canvas print of the two of them in action as our Draw Masters, a small token when compared to the long, selfless hours they have given to our club over the years.  It is safe to say there are very few of our club members who have not been touched by Bob and Gail's generosity over the years.

Bob and Gail will continue to be on call to assist us whenever it's needed.  We wish the two of them all the best as they settle in to their new home in Orillia.

Crystal Heart Bonspiel
The Crystal Heart Bonspiel is an annual event held in Ottawa to raise money in support of the Heart and Stroke Foundation.  This year the event was held on February 6, 7, 8, and 9 having nine different Ottawa Area curling clubs participate in this huge event. The Barrie Curling Club was well represented with 3 teams making the trek to support this very worth while cause. All 12 ladies had a great deal of fun plus the Jenn Marquis team played themselves all the way to the finals only to come a little shy of winning the trophy.  The big winner however, was the Heart and Stroke Foundation with $75,338.00 raised during the event.

The curlers representing Barrie were:

Dorothy Lamers.              Jenn Marquis.               Gayle McKenna
Bonnie Neely.                    Kathy McNabb.             Aline Brunet
Karen Branden.                  Sharon Kiley.                 Renee Dadswell
Jackie Giddings.               Sheila Dadswell.            Irene Perryman
