LIFE IN THE TIME OF COVID
Leslie Ferrin

We are thinking of you, our artists, colleagues and friends.

Wherever you are, and hopefully safe, we are all experiencing the new reality of living in a profoundly changed world. We’ve been hearing of so many challenges in day to day life, fear of exposure, loss of employment, constant worrying for loved ones and managing varying degrees of long term isolation.

Last week, our third in quarantine, our particular struggle was complicated by a surge in internet demand within our small, rural community that is still without broadband service and suffers from chronic, spotty cell service. Due to social isolation, we must now use the internet for everything we do, to work, to make purchases, to stay connected with distant family, and to provide access to online school for our youngest resident, Roosi Isupov. We live in rural America where we can take daily walks and never see another soul. We feel fortunate to be where we are and continue what we do given the limitations of remote work. Our inconveniences pale when we connect with those in urban hot spots who are living densely, surrounded by incessant 24/7 wailing sirens and alone. Together we will get through this with you and our artists who are resilient, determined, creative. We will remain connected to one another through our shared support of art, culture and empathy for one another.... the director note continues.

CRYSTAL MOREY

First ... Congratulations to Crystal and Shane and a warm welcome to baby Isla who is giving you both a new perspective on the role of nurturing and a welcome distraction from the outside world.

Back to the stories ... Crystal Morey presents recent works in Nature/Nurture, drawn from her solo exhibition Venus on the Waves. Throughout 2019, Crystal engaged in deep research, making connections between baroque art, porcelain figurines and climate change. From the show, two were acquired by the Crocker Art Museum and Monterey Museum of Art for their permanent collections.

Morey's series continues with three new works featured in the 76th Scripps College Ceramic Annual: Sentiment and Skepticism, Our Culture of Contradictions in Pomona, CA.

ON NURTURE | Crystal Morey
"I grew up in Northern California of the 1980s and 90s, influenced by the movements of free speech, feminism, and living close to the land. My ideas of gender were rooted in feminine strength, connected to the power of nature. As my love for nature, equality, and art have grown, becoming my own, I have realized the historical absence of female voices depicting our bodies and experiences. Now, as a woman and an artist, I want to reclaim the art historical nude with its powerful beauty, relationship to the natural world, and the ability to share a new, contemporary narrative." - Crystal Morey

Nature/Nurture is a group exhibition of twelve contemporary female artists invited to explore the influence of gender and its impact on their practice. The exhibition explores these ideas that range from direct interpretations of the natural world to more abstract notions, such as the construction of gender and the endowed role of women within their personal and professional careers. Works in clay range in form from individual vessels to composed still lifes and figural and abstract sculpture. The exhibition remains on view in North Adams and when MASS MoCA reopens their galleries to the public, we can resume our programming.

An intersection of two passions: art history and nature. Pop surrealist Crystal Morey makes east coast debut.

NORTH ADAMS — To gaze upon artist Crystal Morey's delicate, highly-detailed porcelain statues is to take a trip back to a time when goddesses were worshiped and loomed large.

Small in scale, her animal-human hybrid figures are reminiscent of tutelary deities, house guardians and magical talismans. An unseen force undulates from their stark white nakedness, transforming their romanticized female forms into vessels of strength and power, whether intertwined with one another or posed alone.

Happy #internationalwomensday! To all the women, girls, and non-binary people out there and those who love them, let’s celebrate! I love thinking of the thread of women who have come before - carrying, supporting, and creating the opportunities we have today. The thread continues with us, and into the future!
