Find the library at your place this National Library Week April 19-25

This week, C.C. Mellor Memorial Library invites all community members to find the library at their place by visiting the website [link] to access virtual services and resources. While the library’s physical spaces may be temporarily closed due to COVID-19, the public can discover ebooks, movies, video games, online storytimes and much more—all from home!

In times of crisis, libraries respond to their community’s needs in innovative and inspiring ways. Throughout the coronavirus pandemic, libraries of all types are continuing to make a difference in people’s lives by providing electronic learning resources, including virtual homework help, online crafting and DIY sessions as well as information about keeping your family well and safe. At CCM, there are a wide array virtual services!

For Kids

Every day, Tree Pittsburgh be sharing a different resource on our Facebook, Twitter, and (when appropriate), our Instagram. There will be videos, writing or drawing prompts, outdoor activities, and these activity pages.

Monterey Bay Aquarium: Watch penguins, sea otters, sharks and the Aviary on live webcams.  Clearwater Marine Aquarium: This is the main view of the Winter Zone habitat. The habitat consists of three connected areas, so you may see the dolphins swim between the areas.

For Adults

Dancing Alone Together aims to be a central resource for the dance world during this time of “social distancing”. Susan recommends Dancing Alone Together is ongoing and I've been using it a lot. Great way to have some fun, stay (or get) in shape, but mostly a nice opportunity to give something new a try in the privacy of your home. Pets don't care how silly you look.

If you're missing your regular gym time, NerdFitness.com has lots of easy exercise routines and plans that don't require any equipment. Here's an easy beginner bodyweight strength circuit.

Discover great local music artists through Stacks, a project by CLP. No library card required to listen online, just to download tracks. Cameron recommends: Brittney Chantele, a pop/hip-hop artist whose works draw influence from their work as an outspoken activist on a number of social justice issues. Their albums "Labels" and "A Fire on Venus" are available via Stacks, and you can find more about them and their work (including their latest album "The Golden Opportunity") at https://www.brittneychantele.com/

Whether you want to get inspired to try a new recipe, find out what all the fuss about "sourdough starter" is, or just take a few minutes to enjoy some lighthearted content, the Bon Appetit Test Kitchen's youtube channel has something for everybody. Cameron recommends: the video series It's Alive, starring Brad Leone. Have a good chuckle at Brad's zany antics, and learn about fermentation while you're at it.

Wolf extends Pennsylvania stay-at-home order until May 8, announces ‘small steps’ toward economic reopening

"Gov. Tom Wolf announced “small steps” toward a gradual economic reopening, while extending the state’s stay-at-home order until May 8. The original order was set to expire on April 30. Other states in the northeast have already extended their stay-at-home orders. In New York, residents must stay home through at least May 15, and New Jersey’s order is in place indefinitely."

April is National Poetry Month!

Here at C.C. Mellor Memorial Library we love poetry, so we've created a Happy Haiku game! During the month of April, we'll be posting daily haikus written by staff and community members on our social media pages. We want to focus on the positive, so we invite you to join us in writing haikus about things that bring you joy!

A haiku is a three line poem. The first line is five syllables, the second is seven syllables, and the third is five syllables. Think about what puts a smile on your face, play around with words, and don't forget to tag us and invite others to participate. Be sure to include #CCMHappyHaiku, so we can keep track of all the little moments of happiness.

We can't wait to see what everyone creates!
