COVID-19 Resource Guide Built by Mordecai Community Neighbors

Welcome to the first-ever community wide Google Doc, accessible and editable, by all neighbors with the goal of making life bearable amid COVID-19. Some might call this a survival guide built by neighbors for neighbors.

Announcements:

No MCAC Meeting on April 14:

The Mordecai CAC is reorganizing. Get involved as we determine the future of our community organization. We will continue to make plans and seek feedback. What should our new name and mission be? What is your vision for a community organization? Join the discussion.

We will not have a regular meeting on April 14.  Our leadership team plans to meet on Zoom this week or next week. If you'd like to join us to share your ideas, please email Dana and James at chair@mordecaicac.org.  All neighbors are welcome- we'll email you the Zoom link.

CORNER PANTRY! Get involved

Mordecai neighbors set up a Corner Pantry bin, located at the corner of Wake Forest Road & Glascock inside the "Little Free Library" box.The pantry contains non-perishable food items and supplies for those in need. If you are able to contribute, please do! Info: AdrianLstandish@gmail.com.

Thanks to the Standish Family for implementing this great idea!  They were WRAL Neighborhood Heroes for April 3:   Watch the story here:  https://www.wral.com/corner-pantry-helps-feed-people/19041375

And the Corner Pantry was also featured in the News & Observer!  https://www.newsobserver.com/news/local/article241680426.html

The Community Yard Sale Day and Mordecai Plant Sale, originally planned for April 25, have been canceled.  We hope to reschedule Yard Sale Day for the fall.

Several people asked about the plants, so we reached out to Josh Ingersoll, Historic Sites Manager at the Mordecai Historic Park.  "Unfortunately like everything in this situation things got complicated with the Mordecai Plant sale. Just because our greenhouse was unable to keep all the plants alive with the staffing restrictions, all of the Mordecai plants we are able to save will be donated to the Raleigh City Farm staff who are going to incorporate them into one of their events. I would recommend that everyone keep an eye out for the City Farm’s upcoming events, and hopefully some of the Mordecai plants will be there, able to be obtained."

The Raleigh City Farm will be starting their weekly Farm Stand on April 22.  Read more here

Mordecai Parks Committee Update:

The grass is getting tall! (good for the bees :)  The City mowing of Small Areas is scheduled to resume April 27.  Poplar Springs and Marshall Street green spaces will be one of the first on the list according to our City contact.

January and February volunteer hours were used in “Live Staking” along the banks of Marshall Street Park and removing non-native plants. In March, we planted seven trees on the southwest side of Marshall street. All plantings are mark by white flags. The trees will be on the City watering cycle for the next two years which should help in getting them established.

On March 16th, the City installed a second picnic table in Poplar Springs Park. The purchase was made through the neighborhood grant application with the City.

Due to the coronavirus, future volunteer days have been but on hold.  We have tentatively scheduled October as our next volunteer month, date to be set by the City staff.

Future plans for Poplar Springs and Marshall Street Parks include:
1. Storm water assessment
2. Erosion control
3. Boundary planting
4. Rock and wood features

Anyone interested in participation can e-mail us at parks@mordecaiCAC.org

Seaboard Update:

Duke Energy started undergrounding their distribution lines on Halifax Street, between Seaboard Avenue and Peace Street on Wednesday, April 8.  There will be sporadic lane closures in this area for the next 3-4 weeks.  Duke Energy’s contractor has informed me that they plan to keep at least one lane open to through traffic in this area.

Person Street Stripes!

The Engineering Services Department Roadway Design & Construction projects are still ongoing. Crews continue to progress on the curb ramps on Wake Forest/Blount/Person. The thermo striping was anticipated to begin on April 9, and is dependent on weather. Striping will start down near Hoke St to avoid conflict with the curb ramp installation.
