Communication & Planning

As we approach the 4th week of Lockdown, it is important that you are planning various scenarios and communicating these to your staff. Or even better, where possible, involve your staff in the scenario planning and get them to provide how it may work best for everyone.
The government will announce on Thursday what Level 3 will look like and on 20th April whether the lock down will be extended or lifted. Planning and communication needs to start now in order to hit the ground running with your business.
You need to plan for:

  • Lockdown being extended
  • Drop down to a Level 3 (will have greater restrictions)
  • Drop down in a few weeks to Level 2
  • What happens after 12 weeks of current subsidy
  • Any other scenario you can think of
Questions that need to be asked:
  1. Can I operate at this Alert level?
  • What does operating at this level look like?
  • Do I need to change my business model?
  • Can my clients operate?
  • Can my suppliers operate?

  1. What does it mean for staff?
  • Do I need all my staff back in workplace or just certain roles?
  • Can I still pay at 100%? 80%? Wage subsidy level?
  • What PPE do we need?
  • What Social distancing measures are required?
  • What changes do we need to make to the way we work?

  1. What does this mean for my cashflow?
  • What is my market and client base? Does it still exist?
  • Can I adapt my business to suit the changing environment?
  • Can I adapt to meet a new need?

  1. What health and safety measures will be required?
  • For my staff?
  • For my clients?
  • For deliveries?
  • For suppliers?

It is essential that as business owners you are planning now and continually communicating this to your staff, in order to be able to operate as quickly as possible in a safe manner.

The wellbeing of yourself and your staff is critical and the more planning you can do with staff, the easier it will be to manage for everyone.
Throughout the week we will continue to provide you resources and information to assist in changing from Lockdown to the next level.
If you need support in doing so, please do not hesitate to contact:-

Document, Document, Document!

If you have already, or are having to, make changes to staff hours and remuneration after the 4 weeks of Lockdown, you need to ensure that this has been documented and in line with the Employment Relations Act
The Canterbury Employer's Chamber of Commerce has created a template to assist employers in documenting and managing changes to staff hours and remuneration due to Covid19.
