April 2020

Good morning,

I hope that you were all able to have some special time this long weekend with your families.  At HHS, the safety and health of the students continues to be our primary concern.

By now you are aware that all classes at HHS, since last Monday April 6th, are being taught online with our Learning @ Home classroom model. I have listed below some of the questions that you may be thinking about moving forward.

  • We do not have a device or internet at home.

Today we start the next phase of support, from our technology survey and communication with families. This process involves many factors as well as the Health Unit, so please be patient.  It will be resolved.

  • Currently my child is working full-time as their part time job is now a front-line worker.

The assignments and tasks for students will be posted regularly in their online communities.  However,  there will be  flexibility in completing tasks and hopefully this can prevent any additional anxiety. Students and families need to reach out regarding extensions and personal/family situations so that teachers are aware. The more communication, the better. Ultimately, Teachers do not want to call home with a concern of incomplete work and make more stress, by adding to factors you are potentially dealing with.

  • My child is struggling and is feeling overwhelmed, how can they be expected to concentrate on school work?

Please reach out to me and let me know, as again the well-being of the students is a priority. As well you/your child can also reach out to their Guidance counsellor through email Nico Byl - nico.byl@tldsb.on.ca & Ally Myers allison.myers@tldsb.on.ca for additional support.

  • Is my child getting their accommodations?

Every teacher has an electronic copy of your child's IEP and as is normal practise, the teacher will be able to support.  However, the accommodations may look different, or we may need to tweak them to fit this online learning environment. All teachers and  myself will do everything in our power to support your child to be as successful as possible.

  • Will they be opening the schools in May?

The most up to date information will be shared via the TLDSB website.  As you are aware, we get our information from the Province regarding next steps of this pandemic.

Continue to reach out, ask questions and share photos of learning, etc.  I love these and it brightens my day!  Students can also reach out directly to teachers.

Stay Safe.  We are all in this together.

Jill
