April 2020 Newsletter

Well friends it goes without saying that all our in person events will be postponed for the foreseeable future. Try to stay inside and stay safe and as a group we will weather this storm together. Take this time to get creative and do some social fly tying over a video chat service of your choice and fill that fly box like you've always wanted to. At any rate we will make it through this and in the mean time stay safe and stay healthy.

Upcoming Volunteer Events

Nooksack Bull Trout and Dolly Varden Aquatic DNA Survey

Do you wonder where different fish species live in the Nooksack and want to help the local trout and salmon populations?
Then join us to create a detailed inventory and map of our trout and salmon communities that will be used to help inform future watershed decisions. During the first week of August, the USFS National Genomics Center in collaboration with TU, 4th Corner Flyfishers, and field work by citizen volunteers like yourself, will conduct a DNA bioblitz of streams and creeks throughout the Nooksack basin.
The bioblitz involves collecting environmental DNA water samples at predetermined locations throughout the Nooksack drainage network.
Genetic testing of the water samples makes it possible to determine which species occur upstream. This species distribution information will improve our understanding of these species and be useful for future resource management decisions.
How to participate – Following 30 minutes of instruction, anyone with a GPS or location-enabled phone and capable of accessing the stream can collect samples. There will be an online webinar presentation in May to provide more information about the project and how to sign up.
Information updates including date and time of the May webinar will be posted on the North Sound Trout Unlimited website at https://www.northsoundtu.org/edna.html
