Alfred L. Watkins Scholarship & Award  -applications due Friday, April 17th
Otherwise known as the S.T.E.P. Scholarship, this annual award honors a man who dedicated his entire professional life to the development of student musicians over a period of 38 years. Serving as Director of Bands at Lassiter High School for 31 years, Alfred Watkins mentored and inspired tens of thousands of students to become better musicians, better students, and better members of their community. Alfred Watkins was the driving force and the creative genius behind the motto, “S.T.E.P.”, and the philosophy behind each of the four foundational tenets: Spirit, Tradition, Excellence, and Pride. He personally instilled these principles into the culture of the band and the psyche of every student that wore the uniform.

The purpose of the award and scholarship is to recognize two male and two female graduating high school seniors from the Lassiter Marching Band Program (Winds, Percussion, Colorguard) that demonstrate a proven track record of excellence to the Band Program. The award is not based solely on marching or concert band prowess but is structured to reward total contributions in the classroom, the band program, and the community.

The winning students will receive a one-time scholarship of $1,000 and the runners-up will receive a one-time scholarship of $500 each sent to their institute of higher learning in their names.

Chris King Memorial Scholarship -nominations due May 3rd

Chris King was a percussionist in the LHS Band from 2011-2015. He died in April, 2016. Chris thoroughly enjoyed his years in the LHS Band and the friendships he made with other band members. In the journal that his closet friends in band prepared in his memory, Chris was described as funny, goofy, entertaining, cool, and even eccentric! But more importantly, they described him as kind, helpful, accepting of others, never willing to put others down, one to befriend underclassmen, and one to divert attention from those feeling embarrassed.

To honor Chris' life, his parents have established the Chris King Memorial Scholarship. This IS NOT a scholarship based on academic achievement or musical skill. Instead, it IS a scholarship based on character and only those that exhibit Chris’ most important character traits should be nominated. Only seniors and juniors in the LHS Band or Color Guard are eligible for the scholarship. Recipients will be chosen from nominations made by members of the LHS Band and Color Guard, regardless of academic class and all are encouraged to nominate a candidate. Please submit your nominations on the form below by Sunday, May 3, 2020.

Two $1,200 scholarships will be awarded this year. The Chris King Memorial Scholarship fund is established with the Cobb County Foundation, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. The foundation will distribute the scholarships directly to the recipient’s qualified 2 or 4 year college in the form of a credit for tuition, books, or fees. Since a recipient might qualify for other scholarships (e.g., GA HOPE) that might already cover their tuition in full, recipients can decide when to use the funds and how much they wish to use at any time, up to the scholarship total.

Commitment Day -new band members and parents
The LHS band directors will be holding an informational meeting via Zoom on Tuesday, April 21st, for all rising freshman interested in joining the Lassiter Trojan Band.  Please send this flyer to your friends with 8th graders!

Outstanding Payments
From the treasurers…Our fiscal year will come to an end soon and we need all families to check their student’s account statement for outstanding balances. If you plan to keep the old uniform jacket from marching season and have not paid the $50, please send us an email to let us know you want to keep it and we will send an invoice.

Watch your email for your band statement -those will be sent in the coming days.  We have a LOT of outstanding payments that need to be collected.  If you have a statement balance, please follow the instructions on your invoice to satisfy your account as soon as possible.

If you have any questions about your account, email us at treasurers@lbba.org.

Website Updates
Our webmaster has been hard at work (thank you Craig Caldwell!) making improvements to www.lassiterbands.org.  The goal is to have everything working well enough to take 2020/2021 band registrations online (what??!!). Yes!  Our other main goal is use the website is a good source of information, whether your new to band, or can't remember what was in the most recent Blast.

So, here are just some of the improvements -with more to come.

Under About, you can find information about Lassiter Music Institute (LMI), as well as all other band programs.

Send your friends with Middle School Band students to 'Joining Band' to get them started down the road to discovery.

You'll also find the 2020 Summer Schedule (as we know it so far) here.

Under LBBA, you'll find Get Involved, where you can see all the Committee roles, and other ways to be involved or contribute.

Under Email Blasts, you'll find . . . Blasts!

You'll also find all you need to know about Uniforms here.

(Don't visit Make a Payment -this doesn't work yet!)

So, lots of progress, and lots more to come so visit often!

2020/2021 Season
We do know some things about the 2020/2021 season that we wanted to share.

First is the Summer marching schedule.  Unlike years' past, there will be no marching camps immediately following the end of the school year.  The schedule so far is:

July 13-17 Band Camp
July 20-24 Band Camp
July 30 Full Winds
July 30-31 Percussion/Guard Camp

The second known item is fees.  The core band fees will be the same as the 2019-2020 season, with core marching season fees of $800 and concert season of $150.  This does not include travel or accessories.  A full fee schedule will be available prior to registration.
