It’s Day 20 of the lockdown. The initial lockdown put in place by president Cyril Ramaphosa has been extended by a further two weeks. So South Africans will be in lockdown until the end of April or even longer. This all depends on the rate of infections. On April 13, health minister Zweli Mhkize and Ministerial Advisory Committee (MAC) chairman for COVID-19, Professor Salim Abdool Karim briefed the country. Professor Karim outlined South Africa's efforts in fighting the virus as well as projections for the future. Check out the full presentation HERE.

What’s happening on campuses?

Writing in The Daily Maverick, Gaopalelwe Mathiba, a former student leader, LLB & LLM cum laude graduate and doctoral researcher at UCT says the universities are facing many challenges in this time of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"In conclusion, the emerging and ever-changing dynamics around Covid-19 clearly show that universities are also not off the hook in preparing for the new era post-Covid-19 and how they plan to face that era with less strain on the university ecosystem."

In other news, two vice-chancellors have taken a cue from the president and cabinet and have decided to take a salary cut. University of Johannesburg VC Professor Tshilidzi Marwala and Rhodes University VC Dr have pledged 33% of their salary to the Covid-19 relief fund.

Check out OUR COVERAGE of how universities within South Africa and around the world are dealing with COVID-19.
