Do you know the meaning of our logo?
Huitzilin, Colibri, Hummingbird
Huitzilin symbolizes the image of la voluntad because this small bird can, with its will power, accomplish to do what most winged beings cannot. The hummingbird can fly backward and upside down, it feeds while hovering, and it can lodge its beak into a tree trunk during the winter nights, maintaining its life force in near hypothermia in order to conserve its energy for the next day's activities. For humans, the Huitzilin will power manifests itself in resolve and determination, such as the will to fight social justice, or the will to share, rather than act selfishly. Huitzilin, as the symbol of our long heritage of struggle and perseverance, relates to the activist-advocate legacy of the Chicanx movement and to all Departments of Chicano and Latino Studies across the nation.
This design was originally developed for the Department by Ray Roybal.
