Even though the Partnership for Southern Equity family is sheltering in place and our offices are closed until further notice, the work of equity continues. Pictured above is a shot of our weekly team check-in call, which gives everyone a chance to connect as we endeavor to serve the equity ecosystem. We are following the interim guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to prevent the spread of the illness in our respective communities, and in the local and regional communities in which we serve. As you already know, COVID-19 has exposed many inequities in our healthcare system and civil society...(read more)
Caring for our communities and our team...
Join the Partnership for Southern Equity and hundreds of organizations as we advocate for utility companies to NOT shut off peoples' utilities because of nonpayment as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. If you or someone you know has had one or more of your utilities disconnected since March 16 please fill out our survey at http://www.bit.ly/noshut-offs to connect with this effort or contact Just Energy Community Organizer Wan Smith. Together we will prosper!
#ATLCounts

The United States Census of 2020, will be the 24th United States Census. The census provides critical data that lawmakers, business owners, teachers, and many others use to provide daily services, products, and support for you and your community. Every year, more than $675 billion in federal funding go to hospitals, fire departments, schools, roads, and other resources based on census data. PSE supports the City of Atlanta's #ATLCounts initiative to ensure everyone is counted, which ensures a more equitable division of funding and representation in our communities.

#VoterRegistration

The Georgia Presidential Primary has moved to June 9, 2020! Moved recently? Has your name changed? Make sure you are eligible to vote in this next election by registering to vote today. It only takes a few minutes to make sure your vote counts.

The Just Energy team is rolling out "Quick Chats", short informational videos about key issues they organize around and provide background in a digital format to help advocates adjust to working remotely. The first video (above) is now online and features Phyllis Richardson of Georgia WAND talking about our work against the overbudget and overdue expansion of the Plant Vogtle nuclear power plant near Waynesboro, GA. More videos are in the works on a variety of topics including the Census, energy burden, and weatherization/efficiency. Community partners are encouraged to send suggestions for speakers and topics to Just Energy Community Organizer Wan Smith and Just Energy Program Associate Blythe Coleman-Mumford. Let's keep the work of equity moving!

#JustGrowth
  • The Just Growth team continues to work with the City of East Point. Luckily, we were able to attend some Neighborhood Association and other community meetings before the pandemic, but we are now looking into innovative ways to engage East Point residents. Shifting our focus to tasks doable in this online moment, we have been collecting baseline data of the city and equitable policy suggestions. In addition, our team has also been helping advise the City of East Point leadership on equitable ways to address COVID-19.
  • PSE was again selected as the Racial Equity Champion for the TransFormation Alliance!  Although specific dates and details about programming are yet to be determined as the pandemic unfolds, PSE anticipates continuing the resident leaders TransFormation Academy this year, both for adults and students.
  • We have been able to continue our Equitable Development Implementation Tool (EDIT) work with Georgia Tech Students from afar and are about to wrap up with them. We are grateful for their work in furthering our tool by creating an in-progress website and rough tool simulator.
  • Our Just Growth team was grateful to have a large call to discuss Westside Park with key members in the community surrounding the park area. We were thrilled to hear the work that already has gone into the Park’s renaming and ensuring equity through the park's creation. Our team has agreed to support those leading the charge in this work.
  • Just Growth has also been involved in its circles supporting coalitions and petitions that promote our PSE mission. Our team has been discussing and researching ways in which we can shift RLE and TFA to be supportive of participants through and after COVID-19 addressing potential trauma, inequities, and shifts caused by the pandemic.
#JustHealth
  • The Just Health team would like to express its gratitude to the Kresge Foundation and Institute for Sustainable Change (ISC), the Partnership for Southern Equity (PSE), Smart Growth America (SGA), and all fellow planning grant recipients were afforded an opportunity to convene with one another, February 10-12, 2020, in Atlanta, GA. During our convening, we learned, engaged, strategically planned, and supported efforts toward the elevation of equitable missions to ensure that the intersections of Climate Change and Health Equity's impact remain plainly understood, and improved upon in our communities ongoing. Reflective of our most promising practices, institutions, leaders, and projects ahead, the CCHE project team additionally benefited due to the valued commitments of community partners including, Ms. Chenee Joseph, Historic District Development Corporation (HDDC), Dr. Charles E. Moore, Grady Health System, and Ms. Brittany Evans, Emory University and Mtamanika Youngblood, Chair, HDDC, and, former PSE board chair. CCHE project lead, PSE Just Health Manager Chloe A. Mondesir, would also like to especially thank PSE Just Energy Director Chandra Farley and PSE Just Energy Manager Eriqah Vincent for their continued leadership and co-facilitation. The significant contributions of our own Dr. Mildred McClain, Suzanne Burnes, and Sterling Johnson, were also widely appreciated, and truly reflect the great strength of our PSE ecosystem-based model to educate, connect, and empower.
#JustOpportunity
  • Due to COVID-19, the Just Opportunity team postponed its April Just Opportunity Circle (JOC) meeting and the screening of Striking Voices. While they had been exploring ways to transition to a virtual meeting, it felt best to regroup and focus on ways to appropriately respond in the wake of current events. Just Opportunity Program Manager Sterling Johnson is currently scheduling check-ins with JOC members to hear their feedback on ways the JOC can more proactively support equity work from their respective organizations and ways to collaborate.
