for Wednesday 22 April meeting with this voucher:

Join us on ZOOM and hear from Brendan Donoghue, a professional 1st AD and commercial producer about some of the challenges of developing and shooting powerful stories.

Every time you hear a professional speak, not only is it interesting, but you pick up all sorts of little tips, tricks and pointers to improve with.

And it's all on ZOOM from the comfort of your own living room. Make a cup of tea, sit back and enjoy!

NOTE: to participate in the meeting you have to get a ticket - it's FREE to club members, but it allows us a way to anticipate numbers and visitors have to pay a nominal $2.95 fee to join, which helps with the club's running costs.

MEETINGS SUSPENDED

until further notice!

Due to the danger of infection and to the government directives, the SVM Meetings have been suspended until further notice.

We are going LIVE via the Zoom on the Web

Are you suffering from CABIN FEVER from the Lock Down?

Well, relief is coming your way across the internet. The SVM Club is gearing up to interactive video conferencing using ZOOM, and we are not talking about a zoom lens, but a system on the web similar to Skype, but better, and it's FREE. So read on to find out more...

Electronic Eye

Sydney Video Makers club newsletter

Dear <<First Name>>, we are so glad that you are reading this :)
Find us on the web:
  1. Club website
  2. Facebook (377 members)
  3. Meetup
  4. Blog (NEW, in Beta)
  5. Send us an e-mail
The Electronic Eye, or EE for short, is the newsletter for the Sydney Video Makers (a.k.a. SVM) Club. You can peruse past edition of the newsletter on our website. We use this newsletter to advise of our upcoming club meetings and provide pertinent news items from our members. We do not wish to be a "me too" video magazine as there are plenty of those already on the web.
The EE is open to both financial members and non-members who are interested. If you wish, you can easily unsubscribe at anytime and if you got this forwarded to you, and want to subscribe you can do so via our club website. Also see our Facebook page.

22 April Wednesday 8pm Programme

Zoom is a web based interactive conferencing application. You can join and use it for free for any conference and you can host your meeting with up to 100 participants and up to 40 minutes time. Above that you need a PRO account, but don't worry, we have that, so you don't need to. If the hosting person has a PRO Zoom account, then meetings can go up to 24hrs, however participants do NOT need a PRO account.

You can participate on most internet connected devices, such as Android or Apple iPhones, tablets, iPads, Windows or Apple Mac computers. It is best, but not essential, if your device has speakers (or headphone), a microphone and a camera.

For a light hearted overview, watch this.

For a really good intro video see this - however you don't NEED to learn about hosting, unless you wish to do your own group hosting.

Do NOT use telephone for voice, just stick with VoIP/Computer.

How we are going to use ZOOM

This is a new direction for us, so we will be evolving our usage, but here are things that we are planning to do:
  1. Interactive presentations - a presenter giving a talk, but with the audience able to ask questions, either by typing, or audio or video
  2. Social interactions, such as discussing a topic or a video

What you need to do

  1. Sign up for a free ZOOM user id. (not mandatory, but recommended)
    1. You can do this with either email address and password
    2. Or use a gmail or Facebook account - that way you don't need another password to remember
  2. Get basic familiarity with using Zoom on your device(s). This can take a little getting used to! Make sure that you have enabled Mic and Camera and selected the correct Sound Device (your speakers or headphones)
  3. Schedule your time so that you can join in the video conference meeting using the link which will be sent out.
NOTES:
  1. Participation is for financial club members, however the committee is considering allowing up to 10 non members to participate one time for free, for a look-see as virtual "guests". Email president@sydney videomakers.org.au to get a pass for this Wednesday's meeting.
  2. We are going to extend access to our fellow NSW Video club members.
  3. Please email us in advance, if you would like to be invited to our first video conference meeting on 8 April at 7:30pm
  4. If you would like personal (remote) assistance in setting up or trying out Zoom, please contact Paul Szilard on 0414 269 404 or president@sydneyvideomakers.org.au

What you can do?

Teams are obviously much smaller groups than the entire club, so meeting is less risky. Teams are to make up their own minds if they want to meet, or instead do so electronically over the internet or telephone. Remember you can have up to 40 minutes per meeting using the free zoom accounts.

Competitions are suspended, however any member or group (team) can send their content via Vimeo, YouTube, or a cloud storage platform such as DropBox, Google Drive, etc. for sharing and comments. Please send your submission to the President@sydneyvideomakers.org.au.

Magazine Articles are invited. Please send in any video related story for publishing. Some topics for you to write about:
  • Describe why you have chosen to buy some video gear and how do you use it and does it meet your requirement (describing what your requirements are, of course)
  • Share any great article or tutorial or news item, that you have come across on the internet
  • If you have any SCRIPT ideas, then share them
  • Describe some of your favourite software tools that you use in your video making workflow
  • Describe how you store and archive video projects
FaceBook is a great way to keep in touch, and if you don't post personal details, then it is safe enough. Join our Facebook page.

I would like to hear from our members on what, if any of the following, would be useful:
  1. FaceBook - a closed group for club members only and/or the current open Facebook page?
  2. An internet FORUM, where members can ask and respond to topics and discussions?
  3. Video conferencing, using Skype or Zoom
  4. Phone conferencing - maybe at team level
  5. More frequent EE Magazine editions with articles
Please send me your response by email to the President@sydneyvideomakers.org.au.
